When Lockie Chapman sings, you can't help but listen. He has one of those voices that doesn't just command your attention but gently brings you into the story he is telling. He's a natural raconteur who, both in his time with The Overtones and during his solo career, has established himself as one of Britain's (adopted) premiere crooners. Stargazer is his own internal musings set to a ravishing finger click groove and mellifluous piano melody that sees him spin a yarn about how the redemptive power of love (any love) can make the gloominess of the world disappear in the twinkling glow of the heavens above. His passionate voice caresses the words as if he is lost in the reverie of his own words; as the song gradually crescendos and adds texture, he becomes a rousing cheerleader - sending that sing-along chorus, spirited horn blasts and layered choir of backing singers past seventh heaven and all the way to cloud nine. 2020 may seem to have been a bit of a bust but it is songs like this that boost your spirits and leave you with an endorphin rush the size of Australia. Utterly glorious and endlessly timeless.
