Christmas 2011: A Cornucopia of new festive singles....

Oh my days and a half! The festive season is in full swing. I was meant to be at a festive Puppini Sisters concert tonight, but they have postponed it for a week so they can take part in a Micheal Buble radio special. Bah and humbug I say. To get me out of the funk of not having some 40s style carols crooned to me tonight, I am presenting you all with a marvelous round up of not one, not two, but eight essential new festive tunes that you may have missed this year! So glad tidings to you as you plough on with festive merriment my chums :)

Christmas singles round up 2011:

  • Joshua Desjardins ~ Macauley Culkin: The follow up to the bonkers genius of I'm A Nerd is an equally witty, zesty and clever slice of pop engineered perfectly for the Christmas market. It's a giddy, rollicking rapid pace reindeer ride of a song, with a perky disco beat, engaging vocals by the brilliantly surnamed Mr Desjardins. What gives this song it's heart and charm are the sparkily compiled lyrics that reference almost every holiday cliche you can think of and revolve around the kicky hook of "now i'm home alone and sulking/who am I, Macaulay Culkin?". Take a listen above for a spiffing good time. PS, loving the ho ho oh introduction. PS part two, let this song by a warning to all naughty girls and boys. Santa does check that list twice...
  • Matt Wertz ~ Snow Globe: Recommended by none other than boy banneder & x factor guest blogger extraordinaire, Pob, I quickly fell for the musical charms of onesie & ugg boot rocking Matt Wertz. This song has such a sunny disposition to it, with some genuinely whimsical lyrical moments about living in a snow globe where it's festive every day, and everything is wonderful and candy cane magical. AND! Not only is the chorus a soaring good singalong, but is layered with some lovely piano, riffy guitar and even a spunky ukelele vibe. Magic :) (Do check out the charming video below too!!

  • Victoria Justice ~ It's Not Christmas Without You: A small part of me wishes that this was part of Spectacular 2: A Very Christmas Musical, and that Simon Curtis had gotten his cheesy pop on to duet on this whirling dervish of a seasonal nugget. It's a full on Christmas pop song with a powerhouse vocal from young Victoria, lots of chimes & jingle-bellsings, and some horny horns to give it a bit of pep & vigour. guaranteed to have you singing around the Christmas tree within minutes of hearing. More sugary than a Praline Mocha, but just as delicious :)
  • Jordin Sparks ~ Angels Are Singing: This song has made me super eager for a full Christmas album from the super lungs of Ms Sparks next year please. It's based around the classic 12 Days of Christmas and never has it sounded so heartfelt and soulful, mixed with a handclap beat and a joyous 'angels are singing' refrain. It really brings the magic of the holiday season through your speakers and puts a massive smile on your face. SMITTEN.
  • Kelly Clarkson ~ I'll Be Home For Christmas: Another idol i'd be willing to splash out money for a festive album is Kelly Clarkson. And trust Kelly to take this holiday standard and still manage to make it sound completely mesmerising & enchanting from the trumpet infused opening to her wistful vocal that just shines like the brightest star. It's completely heartbreaking and devastating, but utterly beautiful...
  • Gavin Mikhail ~ Evergreen: I love how Gavin has not only produced an entirely original Christmas tune that is as gorgeous and powerful as his stunning song, "Brave", but also has a truly glorious animated video to accompany it (below). It's a song of intricate piano, luscious chords and a heartfelt vocal from young Gavin himself. There's a gorgeous moment where it all gets very quiet, before it powers up the volume and intensity for one final run through of the resplendent chorus. Absolutely marvelous...

  • The Sunturns ~ Hallelujah (Christmas Is Here): I don't know much about them, but I bloody love The Sunturns. They are a searing beacon of musical hope in an oft too bleak landscape. And, god bless em, they have put out a whole album of seasonal tunes! HURRAH! My favourite is the one presented here for you - it's got a riveting, uptempo melody to it, some tips of the hat to Do They Know It's Christmas, a lovely refrain, a slightly cynical edge to the lyrics, yet it's all so inviting and convivial that you can't help but get swept up completely with. There are also some brilliant island guitars, a nice blend of the main vocalists in the verses and some added choral style harmonies thrown in for good measure. Give it a go. Bloody brilliant and totally worth 3 minutes of your time :)
  • Mika ~ Vive Le Vent: I have started to hope that perhaps all of Mika's future songs might be in French because he is so darned good at it. His festive offering for a compilation album is the jazzy and spritely Vive Le Vent - an offering so full of joy and exuberance that you may need no other song this holiday December. It's a mix of the Jingle Bells music merged with some Joyeux Noel, a heavenly angelic choir, a spry and playful vocal from Mika - it all adds to one of the most spectacular songs. You can almost imagine it soundtracking a montaged busy shopping trip through the seasonal throngs before collapsing in a heap of presents and bags at the end. Essential x a million :)

The Sunturns - Christmas is Here (Hallelujah)
Kim Wilde - To France (Christmas Edit)
Mika - Vive Le Vent
