I'd started a few blogs this week and then abandoned them halfway through not feeling particularly excited about any new music. The new Alexandra Burke single is alright isn't it, but nothing really to write home (or a blog) about. Anyway, this morning a new video popped up on the VEVO home page and lo and behold (whatever that means), if it wasn't an upcoming group i'm already highly excited about. Add to that a deliriously good new song from one of my fave upcoming fellas and I was suddenly drowning in an embarrassment of musical riches! Read on my lovelies and admire all the amazing music contained within :)
Rune RK & Databoy:
I first got very excited indeed about handsome chappies Databoy several times during 2011, most notably because of their still insanely good song Just Once. It then all went a bit quiet but luckily they have come storming back onto the scene with a blistering new anthem called Memorize Me. Teaming up with Rune RK, they've created an inspiring dance tune that is full of pulsating beats, seductive synths and a chorus that urges "you're gonna memorize me, you're gonna know my name". On it's own, that would be an amazing tune that shines through the wintry clouds and brushes the winter cobwebs away in a glittering display of club-pop magnificence. However, it's a lyrically optimistic and uplifting tune about standing up for what you believe in and being counted. In the context of the running amok at gay pride video(with two of the most adorable cheeky tykes I've ever seen), it's putting forward a message about how people need to see the person, not just a statistic or a label. After all we're all individuals with unique hopes, dreams, desires and urges. A brilliant piece of work that just soars - and I hope is leading to an upcoming album (or at least more music) from the Databoys very shortly...
Nick Hagelin:
Young Nick worked his arse off in 2011, giving us a very good indeed EP, lots of pleasant cover version videos which let his personality and sense of humour shine, and also shaved his pop star hair off to give him an older, edgier look (and to presumably stop him getting hat hair in the winter!) Anyway, he's back with a brand new tune called X Games and it's different to anything he's attempted before. It all kicks off with a slightly echo-ey vibe, like he's in a submarine or something, while he sings falsetto to his strumming guitar. It's a slow build into this seductive and sensual chorus, where his lower register vocals (and uh huhs) shine through, complementing the quiet storm nature of this insiduous, persistent r'n'b groove. Nick as a storyteller, a narrator of his inner most diary thoughts works incredibly well - the spoken rap bits complement the sung lyrics & aren't abrasive in the nature of the song. A real leap forward from an already high standard of musical and lyrical performance. Tremendous.
Coming Thurs - a scandi-pop video breakdown!!
