How exciting (or not exciting at all) that this week's weekend supplement in true Sesame Street style is bought to you by the letter A. Or possibly A from Pretty Little Liars. Or just that I happened to be listening to two songs this morning, both by artists whose first names begin with the letter A. Frankly, I've bored even myself with this inane waffle, so let's dwell no more of and sally forth with the pickings shall we? Onwards!
Asher Monroe ~ Hello Baby:
I don't know much about Asher Monroe other than I recognise him from ace but not to be boyband V Factory, but I have gleaned this - the boy looks good in a shirt & tie, has an impressive set of pipes on him, can bust a move & has excellent pop star hair. This is all very well and good on it's own, but it's fortunate that the first song I've come across of his is an absolute corker. Hello Baby takes the charm & romance of your average Bruno Mars ditty, adds some JLS type club but pop friendly beats & mixes in some Katy Perry pop song sensibilities. With all these influences & inspirations, Asher still manages to inject his own personality and style into the tune which makes it a real winner. It all starts off with a percolating beat that propels the song out of the starting blocks; however, it all crescendos as you approach the chorus into this explosive celebration of beats, synths, dance & a hook that refuses to quit. There's a glorious moment in the middle 8 where it takes this pause, almost like a quick breather before the ibiza-esque vibe starts pulsating once more bringing it to an entirely satisfying conclusion. You can buy the song here & pray that an album of equal excellence is about to follow...
Alexandra Burke ~ Elephant:
I'm intruiged rather than excited by the choice of Elephant for the comeback single by Alexandra Burke. Her first (and only so far) album post X Factor success was an unqualified success with numerous top ten hits, some genuinely great pop moments (Bad Boys, Bury Me) & a bit of momentum that seemed to indicate she wouldn't have the "sophomore slump" that Leona suffered (somewhat). But then nothing. Alexandra took her time with album two, and Elephant keeps getting pushed back, mirroring (to a certain extent) what is happening with Leona & Glassheart, and what happened with Shayne Ward & Obession. Anyway, Elephant seems to have it's roots firmly in the club territory, with only an inkling of pop & it doesn't have the most instantaneous hook to it. However, like Collide by Leona, it does grow on me with each listen, yet like Collide by Leona I get the impression anyone could be singing it really. I'm still looking forward to the next stage of Alexandra's career, I just wish it wasn't taking as long and was a bit more knock your socks off. Knowing me though, a few more spins and i'll bloody love it!!
