Weekend Supplement: 3 Little Words from The Approval...

Remember about 18 months ago when the world was awaiting the arrival of a male Lady Gaga popstar? And then along came Bruno Mars with his romantic ditties about loving people the way they are, wanting to marry them and, uh, putting your hand down your pants? It paved the way once again for men to open up about their feelings and get all ever so dreamy about their chosen fancy. And I bloody love it, I do. That's not to say I don't enjoy a stomping electro-funk pop sung sung by a male (step up to the mic, Asher Monroe), but it's certainly nice to have a more laid back perspective. And that's where this weekend's latest obsession comes in...

The Approval ~ 3 Little Words:

If you haven't checked out the boisterous shenanigans of The Approval's debut song "Up To No Good" (and it's accompanying EP) then you are doing yourself a disservice. Not only is it free (bargain!) but it's a fine introduction to the musical stylings of Roland and Simon, who are of course The Approval. 3 Little Words continues their winning mix of rapid fire lyrics combined with a more laid back piano-guitar accompaniment - the result (seen above in a charming video) are quite the delight. It commences with a piano-vocal introduction as Simon lists all the reasons he is quite the smitten kitten with his lady, while Roland gently adds some guitar to give it a more layered, organic sound. The verses become a little more jaunty as the piano chords become more playful, finger clicks are added and everything is slightly more uptempo; the delivery of some tongue twisting lyrics (something about picking a pebble from a penguin) are sung with grace and ease & it flows without hesistation into that swooning chorus. It's the earnest performance of the song that adds some real charm to the number - as Roland sings "the boys will laugh/think what they like/i'm having the time of my life", it's a relatable, believable lyric that anchors the whole theme of the song. It's a genuinely likeable song and a fine addition to the burgeoning Approval portfolio (not to mention the perfect Valentine's Day gift!) There is also the matter of the video (above) which just shows what can be done on a shoe string budget. Beautifully shot, it focuses mainly on the boys (loving the chunky knit sweater) performing the song interspersed with some lovely touches - candles in the background, stunning model girlfriends, pillow fights & footsie with said girlfriends & some nice moments where they teach the girls how to play their instruments. All in all, a touching, sincere, fine piece of work...
