Single Selection: Christopher ~ Nothing In Common (+ Jesper Nohrstedt & Tommy Fredvang)

It's very nippular out today. A scarf, hat, gloves, thick hoodie and gilet aren't going to cut it. I'm going to need long johns and a thermal vest :D What you will need to warm you up is some scintillating new pop. And that's just what I have for you today! Bonus!!

Christopher ~ Nothing In Common:

Christopher, who I first wrote about some weeks ago when he released his catchy debut single Against The Odds, is becoming quite the formidable contender in my imaginary outstanding new male Pop Star category. He's now onto his very charming indeed second single called Nothing In Common, which has already topped the charts in his native Denmark (according to the always reliable Scandipop). It's a gently chugging dreamy ditty that lyrically feels like a slightly different point of view as Perfect Match by A*Teens, while sounding like (the Glee versions of) Soul Sister and Just The Way You Are. There's nothing wrong with these comparisons as it creates a radio friendly sound and Christopher manages to embue his performance with enough of his own personality to make it a winner from start to finish. Not only do you have some lovely singalong "oh ohs", but there is also some delightful ukelele added to give it a slightly quirky off-kilter feel. Of course I approve of the single cover (above) and there's also a gorgeous piano-vocal version on youtube, which you can hear by clicking here - it should be called the candlelight mix as the sumptuous piano chords play perfectly along with Christopher's vocals. Cannot wait to get a full album from this young chappie.

If you like this, try these...

  • Jesper Nohrstedt ~ Take Our Hearts: Also from Denmark is recent X Factor graduate Jesper who has finally put out his first single, which is also an entrant in the Danish Melodi Grand Prix. I love a good grand prix I do. Anyway, you'll be able to see if he wins this Saturday because that's when the competition takes place - even if he doesn't win, this is a fine debut single that bodes well for a full length album. To say it's magnificent is an understatement - it starts off with a prominent, engaging piano riff and moves towards this growing crescendo when suddenly a whole wall of pop sound explodes against a vibrant chorus. Synths, beats and an effortlessly soaring, layered vocal propel the song forward & you feel yourself caught up in the energy created by the music, and the romantic, optimistic nature of the lyrics. The world needs more songs like this. Play often. Play Loud. Feel Amazing...
  • Tommy Fredvang ~ Make It Better: Let's hope on a coach to Norway and see what they have on offer. Oh goodie it's Tommy Fredvang (who, let's face it is quite pleasing to look at let alone listen to :D) who has a new song out that from the title I expected a big power ballad. Nope, it's a huge anthemic crowd pleaser which feels like a big 80s stadium rocker, with added synths and electro sound effects. It's all very rousing indeed and has a commanding & energetic performance from Tommy. It's hard not to feel that frisson of excitement and jubilation when you listen to the song and sometimes that is what you need to make it through the day. Tremendous :)
