Hurrah! It's a Monday mixtape to brighten up the start of your week. Although now it is technically Tuesday, but to be fair I did pick the songs I wanted for this and write them as a reminder in draft blogger on Monday so it still applies. Sort of. God, I can go off on a tangent sometimes, can't I? I mean Tom Ellis really is quite fine isn't he?? *Ponders & sighs* Anyway, 6 scintillating new songs for your aural pleasurings if you please...
- Love Generation ~ Just A Little Bit: Not a cover of the Liberty X classic (we'll leave that to autre Swedish girl group, Play), but rather a stonkingly good pop-dance anthem that is just stupendous from start to finish. With an air of zebra chic about it (see performance video above), the song is a worthy follow up to their one single a year pattern (Love Generation-2009; I Dance Alone-2010) and exudes a zesty pop confidence that is hard to resist. It's got an assured vocal performance, a pounding bass, a quirky off kilter totally delicious middle 8 instrumental breakdown and a chorus to die for. What more could one want from a pop song? Small request - please don't make me wait a year for more new music! I need to dance alone just a little bit sooner than that :D (See what I did there, etc...!!)
- Gravitonas ~ Call Your Name: Good lord! Gravitonas are back! Eschewing the traditional route of singles & albums, they continue with their (admittedly impressive) catalogue of EPs & remixes. Next to delight fans is the Black Ceremony EP & you can listen to an unmastered version of the main track from it here... It's a swirling, atmospheric, trance-house number with seductive lyrics and hypnotic beats that showcases Andreas' adaptive singing range perfectly. There's a raw animal magnetism in the lyrics, translated perfectly by the vocal performance & the track literally throbs with sexual desire. What's brilliant about Gravitonas is they strive to be different with each single release yet never forgo innovation & quality. They truly are a modern day pop miracle...
- Wolfbox ~ Mirror Wisdom: I'm a bit behind on the latest incarnation of Isabel Guzman but there's no time like the present to catch up. Fresh from adoring her song Automatik on Christophe Willem's Prismophonic album, I'm newly smitten with the track Mirror Wisdom. It starts with some deep, resonant piano that lures the listener into the song before her beguiling vocals weave a musical spell, entrancing the listener & captivating the heart. This beautiful (and often intricate) piano acts as a canvas for Isabel's dreamy vocals that together paint a haunting world. It hints at Kate Bush with elements of Tori Amos, but ultimately is all Wolfbox. Stunning...
- Smith & Thell ~ Kill It With Love: It's rare that a debut act like Smith & Thell start off with a corking track and then manage to improve on it with each subsequent release but my favourite Scandi-English duo have done just that. It's not that I don't love their older tracks (I really do), but Kill It With Love seems like a culmination of all they have learnt before & smashes it out the ballpark (whatever that means). It's a dance corker that is based around a stabbing piano-house riff, the sweetly delivered "Kill It With Love" refrain & a propulsive vibe that is hard to resist. The song wisely knows when to hold back & teaase the listener and when to explode in a cascade of glittering beats that entice you to lose your inhibitions, grab the one you love and shimmy. Utterly amazing.
- Dolly Rockers ~ Get You Alone: Ever since they first burst onto the pop scene a few years back, i have firmly committed myself to being je suis une dolly & patiently waiting for the group to be as massive as I know they can be. Some refining of things later, a new RedOne track has leaked on line and a jolly promising proposition it is too. Full of charm but not without a little sassy attitude, it's kitschy fun from start to finish with a refrain to die for ("gitcha gitcha gitcha alone"). One can only imagine the potential this track has to explode and take the charm by storm. They may have taken their sweet time, but the fruits are oh so delicious...
- Sonny ~ Bad Girl: despite being new to me, Sonny is quite the established pop star in his native Denmark where he has top selling albums, sold out tours and even hit the stage by taking the lead in Grease. Go greased lightning indeed. He's now set to charm the rest of the world with his new single Bad Girl - there's certainly a tip of his fedora to Michael Jackson in there, but Sonny's own personality comes sparkling through on this percussive r'n'b groove. His vocals flawlessly flow to falsetto and back, while the sweet & sensuous middle 8 gives a different perspective from the sparse, groovelicious verse & chorus. It's visually arresting too as the video below demonstrates with some genuinely brilliant dance moves that deserve to be watched over and over again. Certainly one to keep an eye on if you aren't already...
