New and Noteworthy: Ben L'Oncle Soul
When one is looking for someone to deliver nu-soul with a retro twist, France isn't always the most obvious place to go to. However, Benjamin Duterde proves any preconceptions wrong as he has delivered one of the most charming & engaging albums of this genre in recent times - certainly it rivals Bruno Mars for accessible, well produced music that will no doubt appeal to a huge audience outside his native France. With his warm tonal voice, natty dressing & ability to deliver a huge range of emotions in his music, I'm already slightly smitten...
Ben first came to my attention when comparisons started popping up online between his 2010 version of White Stripes' Seven Nation Army and the more recent (almost carbon copy) Marcus Collins version. It's the lead track on his debut album and his interpretation takes the fuzzy guitar riffs of the original and replaces them with influences as far wide as Jamaica and Memphis to give listeners a reggae infused interpretation that sparkles from start to finish. It's an ideal introduction to the fella as it combines what he does well throughout the recent of his self titled debut album - deliver lyrics in a tenderly expressive way while blending blues, jazz, soul & motown inspired rhythms. Another highlight is the stirring song Soul Man - lyrically he addresses that he doesn't feel on a par with some of his musical heroes, however in doing this his refreshingly humble and honest approach elevates his performance (and ultimately the song) to giddy new heights. The smokey hue to his voice plays well against stax styled horns & a totally addictive motown-esque groove.
The rest of the album is a pleasing collection of French and English language delights that will have you singing along in no time. The production values give the project a classic timeless feel, while Ben is the master of delivering lyrics in a nuanced, emotive way that bring songs to life with a vivid, almost tangible energy. It's upbeat and optimistic & sometimes it's music that brings a smile to your face that can get you through these depressing recession ridden days. Do check out Ben's website in the UK to get a free download of Come Home if you fancy a quick trial before you buy. Which you should - it's a dreamy treat :)
