Video breakdown week - day 1: Will Young ~ Losing Myself

So many new videos floating around at the moment, I thought I better catch up and get analysing them frame by frame. First up is lovely William of the Young (celebrating ten years as Britain's premiere pop idol and showing no signs of fatigue or dip in quality) with more to follow as the week "progresses". Hurrah and huzzah, I cry...

William of Young ~ Losing Myself:

  • Just to clarify, I think Losing Myself is one of my favourite tracks from his outstanding new album. Therefore it is a very good choice of single release. bravo young William, bravo...
  • The video starts with William in bed. In satin grey sheets. He seems a bit of a bed hog though because he is lying right in the middle of the bed. While this does not bode well for a good night's sleep if you are his partner, it does indicate there would be quite good cuddling opportunities.
  • Before he gets up, he seems to be having that early morning reflective state of mind. It's good for that isn't it? Early morning reflection in bed, before you brace yourself to shrug off your cosy duvet cover...
  • Oh my. William is up and there are two other fellas in the room with him, dressed identically to him who all seem to be in an equally reflective mood. They are all gazing "soulfully" out of the window". It's quite nicely shot actually...
  • As they all move in unison and have the same actions (such as brushing their teeth, though I would recommend a more angled motion around the upper gums to exhibit full plaque control), perhaps the trio of Wills isn't a dirty romp morning after (oh please, you were all thinking it) but a manifestation of the different facets of his personality. Yes, that English Literature A-Level is paying dividends now isn't it?!
  • There are now 4 Williams grooming themselves in the bathroom and doing jerky movements in time to the music. They are sharing two sinks so are being quite considerate of each other's grooming needs.
  • More jerky dancing. To be fair it's not something you would want to try in a club because people might think you are a loon on loon tablets, but it works well within the confines of the tune and video.
  • William and The Handsomes as I have now dubbed them are off to get dressed, all in the same suits that probably represent how easy it is to blend in with the rat race. Or something. Seeing as I like a fella in a suit, I'm not going to complain that there are now 4 all dressing up. Hurrah The Handsomes.
  • William and The Handsomes are now 5, all looking mighty fine in suit and braces, and busy polishing their shoes. I want those bad boys to shine like the top of the Chrysler building (Annie reference for all you West End Wendies out there!)
  • Ooo they really do look good in braces/shirt/tie combo. J'approve. dribble.
  • Anyway, moving on! Their coffee pouring technique with sideways swoosh move is amazing (1m53) - I am so going into the staff kitchen now to make mine in exactly the same way, I don't care who is around!
  • Just after this, The Handsomes fade away in a line behind William, popping out like the Von Trapp children during So Long, Farewell to stare at him. You can't blame them. He is chedder gorge. He is King Gorge the 5th...
  • The Handsomes continue to mimic William's movements but almost like a wave format, just a few seconds each after him. It creates a really intriguing effect, particularly as he sits down and then gets back up. Well you have to see it obviously, it sounds really boring just written down like that :D
  • During the Middle 8 (ask XO), William is in a somewhat darkened room (though not Dark room, more of an art room) where he keeps coming across The Handsomes (steady! Not literally! RUDE :P) as almost carbon copies of him. It's almost like he's losing himself...
  • He is getting Handsome blocked at every turn. it's quite intimidating. And a little bit alluring...
  • Lots of nice (if somewhat quick) close up of William and The Handsomes. While William sings, The Handsomes lurk in the background as if poised to pounce and smother any individual aspect of William's personality. It's way psychological...
  • Out of the Nightmare Room, The Handsomes absorb into William, he brushes aside his kiss curl and mosies off on his way. Amaze.
  • (PS, as amazing as this all is, it would also have been brilliant if this had been a cover of this Losing Myself...)
