It's Easter weekend so I was only going to listen to religious themed tracks (Heaven, Like A Prayer, Judas, Jesus Wants Me For A Sunbeam, etc :D) but there has been a plethora (such a dirty sounding word - "honey, you get the plethora on and I'll find the whip") of new pop music by established stars that I thought I had better have a shimmy through the latest tunes and let you know what I think. PS Easter Eggs, particularly those chocolate gold bunnies, should be shipped overnight to me by a sexy courier. That is all.
Scissor Sisters ~ Only The Horses:
I liked Shady Love. I thought it was quirky, off kilter and eminently catchy. I think that was just a "taster" though and Only The Horses is the first single proper from their Magic Hour album. It's produced by Calvin Harris and while that shows, it's still got the Scissters sticky fingers all over it. It's got a very "now" Ibiza-saturated rave style beat which suits Jake's vocals extremely well & when the song percolates into a let-it-all-go musical orgasm after the middle 8, it's positively euphoric. Some gorgeous house piano too and it seems set to be the song that soundtracks the summer. Of course I'd like more Ana Matronic but hopefully the album will deliver her spicy input. Bring on the remixes and some bonkers yet brilliant video...
Delta Goodrem ~ Sitting On Top Of The World:
Hurrah! Delta is back. I mean where the fuss has she been all this time, other than recording the odd duet with people. But never mind all that, she's returned with a positively joyous, upbeat, celebrate life number that is very hard not to love. She's cleverly managed to keep some of her signature musical style in there but making it progressive enough that it feels like the interminable wait between albums has been totally worth while. It's almost verging on a dance song and some remixes could push it totally over the edge. Utterly, utterly delightful. Plus the video is all too adorable - it's exactly what I imagine a Debbie Gibson comeback single video would look like. Bring on the balloons and celebrate summer. Delish.
The Wanted ~ Chasing The Sun:
There's this niggling worry that The Wanted (and One Direction, who should totally be releasing Tell Me A Lie internationally next) will change now that the USofA has not only embraced them, but become a little bit obsessed with them. I mean this brand new song (written by Example) will be available in America before Brits get a chance to get their hands on it. Pfffrt. Anyway, what you do get with this song is an absolute natural next song to capitalise on the success of tunes like Glad You Came and Lightning. It's all heavy bass, whoa-whoa-whoa backing chants, rave-esque effects and a big sing a long chorus all about daylight fading and feeling amazing. And i'm pretty sure that's what The Wanted fans want right now, so not a bad selection of single at all...
The Saturdays ~ 30 Days:
Sigh. The Saturdays. There is no denying they have produced some fine songs over the past 5 years (Up, Ego, Fired Up, that ballad single off album one). What's off putting however is whenever a single is out, there is this constant social media barrage of "please let us get a number one". Everyone wants a number one and if it happens, it will happen. Filling my twitter timeline with pleas won't help. Right, moan over. The song is actually rather good and fits in well with their On The Radar sound with a brilliant chorus & amusing video (the face pulling!) Plus! Like Delta, balloons make an appearance early on in the video. Tremendulent! Play quite often as it's a real grower...
