The Anniversaries ~ Part Two: 25 years of Kylie Minogue

How do you address 25 years of Kylie Amazing Music in one blog post? You don't. You just simply point out that for almost as long as you can remember, Kylie music has been an integral part of my every day life, even when there has been a gap between albums. You might point out that as a 14/15 year old, the posters of Kylie and Jason together enabled you to plaster your wall with sex god Jason Donovan (after the haircut, obviously) without too many questions being asked. You might point out that you still have an unopened bottle of Kylie water in your wardrobe that you hope one day will be so valuable it will pay off your mortgage :D You may wish to mention that the sterling work of Brothers in Rhythm in 1994 introduced you to the world of Mr Steve Anderson as well as making you shimmy along to Put Yourself In My Place on a daily basis for months on end. It may even behove you to note that you and your partner of 12 years were actually at the very same Kylie concert in the early 90s and didn't even know it at the time. Amarzing. But basically, unless you are prepared to write an entire novel about 25 years of Kylie Amazing Music, it's not going to fit on one page.

To celebrate 25 years of Kylie, there is a new greatest hits coming out and of course it has ignited hours of twitter chatter about what has been left on, what has been left off and how it is not entirely comprehensive. Of course by this stage no Kylie hits collection is going to be fully comprehensive unless it's several discs long. And frankly the beauty of iTunes and music downloads means that you can quite legitimately create your own Kylie hits albums to tra la la to on a road trip to Wales at the weekend (for example). Here, based on the UK single releases, is my Ultimate Kylie Boxset...

Disc one ~ I Should Be So Lucky / Got To Be Certain / The Locomotion / Je Ne Sais Pas Pourquoi / Made in Heaven / Especially For You / Hand On Your Heart / Wouldn't Change A Thing / Never Too Late / Tears On My Pillow / Better The Devil You Know / Step Back In Time / What Do I Have To Do? / Shocked (DNA Mix) / Word is Out / If You Were With Me Now / Give Me A Little More Time / Finer Feelings

Disc two ~ What Kind of Fool / Celebration / Confide In Me / Put Yourself In My Place / Where Is The Feeling? / Time Will Pass You By / Where The Wild Roses Grow / Some Kind Of Bliss / Did It Again / Breathe / Cowboy Style / In Denial / Your Disco Needs You / Spinning Around / On A Night Like This / Kids / Please Stay

Disc three ~ Can't Get You Out Of My Head / In Your Eyes / Love At First Sight / Come Into My World / Slow / Red Blooded Woman / Chocolate / I Believe In You / Giving You Up / 2 Hearts / Wow / In Your Arms / The One (Freemasons Mix) / All The Lovers / Get Outta My Way / Higher / Better Than Today / Put Your Hands Up (Pete Hammond Edit) / Aphrodite

It's all subjective though (much like the endless debates about which singles should have been picked from albums and when e.g. I still think Your Disco and The One should have led off their respective albums), so do let me know your thoughts - particularly on a disc four rarities disc :)

Also subjective and nigh on impossible to do is a top ten fave Kylie songs list. It really depends on my mood. Sometimes it would be all PWL stuff, other times just rarities. Today, this is what you are getting but it may all change again by tomorrow!!

  • 10 ~ My Secret Heart: I tells ya that I absolutely worshipped the Enjoy Yourself album and that any song on the album brings back giddy memories of my youth. This charming little ditty was less disco infused and presented the softer side of Kylie that I still adore to this very day...
  • 09 ~ All I Wanna Do: Not the Dannii classic obviously, but the rather delightful Especially For You b-side that saw her continuing to duet with Jase The Face. I'm not sure why I love it so much, I just do and I always have to go for the extended version just to prolong my listening pleasure :)
  • 08 ~ Confide In Me: Glorious introduction to the second phase of Kylie's career. Sleek, sophisticated, elegant and sexy, everything about it was absolutely spot on. Love love love the 1-888-CONFIDE visuals in the video, the "stick or twist" purred vocals of the audio and the vocal range she displays here is confident and assured. Essential.
  • 07 ~ The One (Freemasons Mix): Transformed an already glittering album track into an absolutely shimmering disco epic that should have been the lead single for the "X" album campaign. Hopeful, pleading, uplifting and ultimately a euphoric & gorgeous dancefloor epic...
  • 06 ~ Put Your Hands Up (Pete Hammond Edit): Another remix of a single that completely reinvigorated my love for the song in question. This time Pete Hammond took the Aphrodite staple and whipped it into a frenzy that more than paid tribute to Kylie's PWL past. The fusion of past and present works wonders and may be the most vibrant of her recent singles...
  • 05 ~ Wouldn't Change A Thing: We were on holiday in the middle of nowhere in Devon when this came out, and my poor mom drove me miles until we saw a record shop and I bought the cassingle to play on her car stereo all the live long day (wearing out her battery in the process. Oops). Spent the rest of the summer learning the dance moves and showing them off to anyone who would give me the time of day. Good times :D
  • 04 ~ Shocked (DNA Mix): First off, let me just say that the run of singles from the Rhythm of Love album was absolute perfection for me. I loved each one, each video and each remix. Shocked was particularly ace though because it had a stunning new DNA remix and a brilliant Jazzie P rap. It's always finding it's way onto mix cds for an extensive roadtrip or holiday :)
  • 03 ~ Your Disco Needs You: Tragically not a single in England, but it got a video so I just ignore this oversight. Possibly the campest thing Kylie has ever recorded (and that's saying something), it's not so much just an amazing pop song but more of an epic call to arms. Salute, march on the spot, parlez francais and just bathe in the magnificence :)
  • 02 ~ All The Lovers: Proof that Kylie can still wow wow wow wow with exquisite singles that encapsulate just how timeless she is as the premier princess of pop. Everything about this release was sheer perfection from the initial leaked preview through to the stunning video. Why it wasn't number one for 7 weeks is beyond me...
  • 01 ~ Better The Devil You Know: Not only my favourite Kylie song of all time, but one of my favourite pop songs of all time. It was an exciting step forward for Kylie and is often referred to as the dawn of sexy Kylie. There are no words that will do justice to how much I adore this song, so I'll just sing a long loudly one more time and do the silhouette move from the end of the middle 8 in the video. *runs around in plastic see thru mac* MARVELOUS.
