Hurrah! after endless tabloid inches speculating who would be the fourth UK X Factor judge (is it Dannii? Katy Perry? Sinitta??!), it turns out it's only bloody Geri Halliwell - almost (she has to impress at the Liverpool auditions today). Magnifico. If a permanent judge, this would be an unexpected but delightful turn of events and frankly the best possible outcome since Dannii decided not to rejoin. Of course my favourite ex-spice girl certainly knows the world of pop music and cut her judging teeth chops on the Popstars The Rivals panel (where she was practically responsible for the entire career of The Cheeky Girls). She'll no doubt bring an element of feistiness and fun to the panel - I am certainly hoping for some inappropriate flirting with both Gary and Dermot, alongside some barbed comments from Louis in the line of "when did you last have a hit", etc. Brillo. Plus, with a little bit of luck, she'll time the release of her much anticipated Putting On The Bling album for some live show performances. It. Just. Got. Interesting... Here and for no other reason than I feel like it are my fave Harry Gelliwell songs...
- 10 ~ Perhaps Perhaps Perhaps: Proof that Geri could do sex kitten sixties mania just as well as her bandmate Emma Bunton. She practically purred her way through the track no doubt channelling her cat prowess for the future Desire video :D
- 09 ~ 100% Pure Love: One of the tracks that didn't make her third album was a cover of the Crystal Waters track. It's so bloody percolicious that they should have dug it up from the vaults and put it as a "new" track on a Very Geri Hits album. How tremendulent would that have been?
- 08 ~ Mi Chico Latino: Was this the song where she had a week long affair with Chris Evans to prevent Emma Bunton getting a number one? Regardless, it's the most uplifting non-latin latin infused song since La Isla Bonita...
- 07 ~ Feel The Fear: Wouldn't this have been a much better Spice Girls Greatest Hits song? I mean Headlice was nice and all, but this was an autobiographical number about the early days of the group that had it been rerecorded would have bought the story full circle. Oh well, it's lovely with just Geri too...
- 06 ~ Don't Call Me Baby: Surely this (and the next track on the list) should have been bonafide singles from SIYWGF?? The singles campaign for that album was abandoned far too early. This track is a lush 60s influenced groove that shimmies from start to finish. Delightful...
- 05 ~ Strength Of A Woman: Another should have been a single song. Geri perhaps followed the true Spice Girls sound more than any of the other solo efforts and this saw her back in Girl Power territory, but in a rather lovely mature way that somehow made the message that much more powerful...
- 04 ~ Scream If You Wanna Go Faster: And I really did wanna go faster. Blistering, exciting pop that was breakneck speed from start to finish. An analogy for sex as well as the rollercoaster ride of forward thinking pop, this worked on whatever level you wanted to take it. Oo-er!
- 03 ~ Desire: You can't go wrong with a Terry Ronald co-write can you? Oozing sex appeal with every note, the video was a riot with Geri being her seductive best in the office environment. The song is a corker though and nigh on impossible to get out of your head...
- 02 ~ Bag It Up: Surely the musical successor to Who Do You Think You Are?! I think it is not only a huge bundle of fun wrapped up in 3 and a bit minutes of music, but the cd single was also the first gift Darren ever bought me. Ah. Memories :)
- 01 ~ Heaven and Hell: Almost as bonkers and ludicrous as her debut single Look At Me, it's heaven, it's hell being Geri Halliwell is a brilliant read through of her life experiences with the tabloids since she made it big. Always a fascinating listen and perhaps one of her most frenetic and enjoyable songs to date...
