Weekend Supplement ~ 17th June 2012: Call Me (maybe)...

2012 has been quite good for a percolating, perfect pop song so far. Of course, there was last year's big UK hit by One Direction (What Makes You Beautiful) which has now taken over the rest of the world. And most recently, the entire universe has been smitten by the charming chimes of Carly Rae Jepsen's Call Me Maybe. It's easy to see why - Carly delivers a delightful vocal, set over an inviting beat and a melody so strong & memorable, it sticks in your brain from first listen. And of course, as happens with these things, there are tributes, parodies, cover versions galore floating around youtube. Here are two of the best...

West Side Story (Broadway) do Call Me Maybe:

Perhaps inspired by the glorious Anything Goes cast lip synch of the aforementioned What Makes You Beautiful (read my review of that here), the Broadway touring cast have got their talented chops around this year's big earworm anthem. Here are some of my favourite bits from their glorious video...
  • The guy with jolly fine hair and amazing eyebrows who does the locked lips/throwaway key bit at the beginning...yum!
  • The boys giving it some "when you're a jet" attitude as the first chorus kicks in...
  • ... and the girls pyjama party right after, all singing into hairbrushes & doing nails. Bliss!
  • Topless fellas chasing around some dame, while another chap gets lipsicle with his special lady. Both girls rightly look like the cats that got the cream :)
  • Who doesn't enjoy a good pratfall by the way?! (1m09s)!!
  • Ooo strut strut strut! Stunning Yellow Dress Lady & her troop give it runway action, while Purple Top Guy & his posse let loose some mainstage a-tti-tude :P
  • The poor bloke at just before 2m getting the reverse of beer googles. RuPaul's Drag Race this ain't!
  • ACES! 2m21s - Shark on the mirror! In your face Jets :D
  • (Everything from 3m15s onwards is brilliant!)
Abercrombie and Fitch do Call Me Maybe:

Seeing as they placed the song on their instore playlist months before it was massive, the A&F boys have every right to sing along to the song. And hey, if they want to do it topless, well that's a-ok too...Here are my fave bits!
  • The first Hot Topless Guy's very literal interpretation of the lyrics through creative dance. Frankly was anyone paying attention to anything other than those rippling abs?!
  • Just before 20s, a gaggle of guys with their arms around each other, but their hands aren't touching flesh. Hilarious :P
  • Hot Topless Guy 1 is back and as the chorus kicks in he's joined by a dancing troop of prancing boys. It's quite the vision :D
  • Boys popping up in front of famous landmarks having a good ol' lip synch. Who doesn't enjoy that?!
  • Tubecrush would frankly explode with sticky goodness if all the fitties wandering around the New York subway were on the London Underground...
  • 2nd chorus = frolicking amongst the pansies. Tremendulent.
  • 1m49s - Parisian Abercrombie! Ooh La La!
  • Love how the British Abercrombie fellas completely ignore the shocking weather and get down with their bad selves anyway :)
  • It's generally an all round jolly good homoerotic treat then isn't it?!
