Single Selection: Big Time Rush, Brock Zanrosso, Cheyenne Jackson & Tino Coury

I love it when a healthy dollop of sophisticated, sparkling boy pop drops into my lap. So to speak. And it's been a pretty good month or so already for blokey pop - Mika served up a winner, Kyle Patrick got his gold on, Chris Wallace pressed everyone's rewind buttons... Here's a few more jewels to add to the mix...

Big Time Rush ~ Windows Down:

I can't work out whether it's completely audacious of boy band to nick Blur's Song 2 riff and electro-disco it up, or whether it is a stroke of master genius. I'm siding with the latter as each time I hear Windows Down I love it just a little bit more. Clearly the well-known sample provides an anchor to the song, but the rest of the tune is a totally enticing affair with seductive lyrics, a throbbing beat, smooth slick harmonic breaks that all lead into a pogo-ing chorus that has you yearning for more. The middle 8 throws in some synthesized effects that provide a brief respite before the full on, exhilarating final chorus run through. Yup, I'm decided - it's a definite stroke of master genius. They are a busy bunch, those BTR boys, but with the right promotional push this could get them as big in the UK as they are stateside. A jolly good time all round - in the pantheon of teen pop growing up, it ranks alongside Miley's See You Again & Aly&AJ's Potential Break Up Song :)

Brock Zanrosso ~ Every Night:

Young Mr Zanrosso is making quite the name for himself as a bona fide pop dude. Fresh from touring with Stef Lang & performing on Canada's Wonderland, he's prepping the world for his new EP by showcasing a track called, Every Night. What you get here is a slow building, pulsing, electro tinged ballad that breathes into life with chiming synths, sparse percussive beat and a refreshingly raw vocal from Brock. No studio trickery on this voice, it allows the lyrics to shine through & the power of his voice to imbue the track with emotive nuance. He uses his voice as a pure instrument - for example, reaching into his falsetto range to convey the desperation of what he is singing, while the melody frames this creating a musical alchemy that is both devastating and irresistable. This is not only bound to please his existing fan base, but appeal to those with an ear for whip smart electro-pop that stirs the soul. Can't wait for a) a video to this and b) that EP to drop pretty darned quickly as I need more from the talented chappy...

Cheyenne Jackson ~ Before You:

Confession. I'm a little bit smitten with Cheyenne Jackson having followed his career on Broadway (Xanadu!) so I'm mightily pleased that he's gone down the solo singer route to bring his easy going charm to the masses. His latest single, Before You, is a soaring, bright and breezy affair celebrating the all consuming feeling of being completely in love with somebody. His voice is effortlessly engaging, powering forth when it needs to, holding back for those more tender moments. With an utterly delightful melody that is both timeless and classic, Cheyenne's onto a real winner here. The video is also a real trip - paying homage to sitcoms of yesteryear such as Addams Family and The Munsters. Plus Cheyenne gets to work those 50s movie star looks all suited and booted Mad Men styl-ee. I approve. Of everything. Bring on the album please :)

Tino Coury ~ Drink My Love Away:

Ah alcohol. The cause of and solution to all lifes problems. No alcohol needed to enjoy Tino Coury's brand new single. It's a crowd pleaser right out the gate (though the video is on the beach - a flash of gratuitous flesh would have been nice :D) that commences with an addictive, repetitive hand clap beat as Tino tells his tale of woe over as the tune propels itself forward with some neat melodic riffs running in the background. It takes almost 2 minutes to get to the chorus, but this just makes it even more powerful and everything that came before it is so delicious that it just adds to the magic of the song. Bodes very well for his forthcoming debut album, This Ones For... and is just as lovely as his previous hit, Diary. Well done that fella!
