The Overtones ~ Loving The Sound (video)
- Let's just say that having done several Overtones video analysis blogs (see links at bottom), my expectations are high for the visual accompaniment to their perky, joyous new single...
- It all starts off very well with a black and white shot of that now iconic Overtone fingerclick pose. This is followed by that classic Timmy bow-tie wiggle, a shot of a tie-pin and a jacket being put on. The Overtones are dressed and ready to go. In black and white form!
- The chaps now have their own neon light sign. The "over" part is underlined and the "tones" part has a line over it. Do you see what they did there?! It's like a much easier version of Catchphrase...
- More wardrobe adjustments (perfections?) take place - a collar pull, checking of a pocket square, straightning the cravat - all these little accrouements are now archetypal Overtones accessories & deserve equal billing with the boys...
- Love that the stage looks like something from an early sixties tv show, what with the backing singers (makes me want an Overtones cover of the Chiffons classic, Sweet Talking Guy) & live band. Pause at 17s for a perfect "screensaver" shot of the boys in full pose mode.
- OOO! The dance routine has started already - energetic finger click, energetic finger click, shoulder shimmy and starwipe arms! Then a lot more happens that I can't quite keep up with, but there are some nifty foot moves and some caressing of the microphones. They all look quite tenderly at the microphones, hopefully because they are well into the moment :P
- Chorus! There's a bit of a shuffle around (Mark and Darren swap end places with Lachie and Mike respectively) and there's some more of that deep shoulder action. Then, there's some rather brilliant step forward step back dance moves that have to be seen (so have a gander at around 1m). Warning: if you attempt this move while waiting for a train and idly singing the song in your head, you will look like a buffoon...
- The camera shot now reveals the boys in colour. I like this. Black and white represents their love and reverence of the classic material that defines their sound; colour tv shows how they have bought it completely up to date. It's amazingly insightful observations like this that got me an A in English Literature A Level 20 years ago :D
- (And by A, I of course mean B, but I was totally robbed. It's not my fault the examiner didn't appreciate my thoughts on symbolism in Cymbeline. BAH)
- MARK FANS! There is a rather lovely Mark moment at 1m25-30 where he does a little spin & then some back to back dancing with Lachie. Pause at 1m30 and he looks like he's having a reet bobby dazzler of a time. Lovely :)
- (PS, in the background, those backing singers (The Tonettes?) are really giving those arms a work out with their emphatic gesturing. This is highly recommended as it will (over)tone those unsightly bingo wings :D)
- The backdrop has now turned red and there are some nice silohuette shots of the band & the Tonettes (rhymes with Ronettes). Interspersed (still an amazing word) with these are some solo shots of the boys - Timmy & his impossible quiff, Mike & a cheeky little grin, etc...
- BOTTOM ALERT!! 2m04s gives you the money shot. It's the fellas bottoms (except Timmy who is full frontal only :D) I'll give you a moment to take this in. *moment* Are you back with me? Lachie's looks particularly pert. That midnight bike round London must have done him wonders :)
- Middle 8 - focus all in on the boys only. Lovely harmonies, nice deep Lachie vocal. There's something about Darren in this scene that is quite mesmerising - he effortlessly makes cravats look insanely cool & has this confident yet charmingly suave aura that fills the screen. Anyway...
- Hurrah! More dancing. There is a fun quasi-line dancing moment where they all shuffle across each other onto their respective opposite sides of the stage, then some hip thrusting (do you need another moment??!). Of course there are more solo shots and some hand behind back foot manouvres. How they make dad dancing look so utterly essential is beyond me! But it works...
- It all ends with a convivial party atmosphere. The boys are freestyling on the stage, the backing dancers have slipped into something definitely less comfortable and are getting down with their bad selves, & even though you can't see them I'm sure the band are having a rollicking time.
- A nice bromance moment finishes it all off. Aw.
