New & Noteworthy: Venice ~ Heart That Could Heal

Venice are a new (to me) 5 piece not-boy band who are set to charm the nation (and beyond) with their assured, confident & effortlessly catchy brand of pop-tinged rock tunes. They've already amassed a fiercely loyal twitter following based on a number of inventive cover versions they've released via youtube. It's now time for the boys to step up to the plate and debut their own material - and have done so to stunning effect. Their debut EP, Venice Vol. 1, is rich in resonant melodies, vibrant instrumentation & soaring vocals. My sources tell me that their live performance at Showcase Live on Monday night was outstanding. Their current "buzz single", Heart That Could Heal will indicate to you exactly why...

The song is an excellent introduction to the band as it acts as the perfect frame for their artistic brand of music - an alluring blend of pop, rock & indie-cool. The song intros over a percussive beat and an almost chanted version of the chorus' hook. Cleverly this gets the refrain stuck in your head from the get-go & will remain there long after the song has finished. Stabbing piano chords take over and provide the canvas for an impassioned vocal performance through the verses; this is then layered with a more textured beat - crescendoing into the chorus. This just flies - lovely harmonious vocals, deliriously addictive falsetto and an exuberant, live sounding backing that really enhances the tune, bringing it vividly to life. At times it's reminiscent of Coldplay & One Republic, yet the band put enough of their own personality in there to make it sparkle as their own musical identity. That refrain is repeated over a militant beat in the middle 8 and creates quite the joyous, optimistic moment before some playful synths bring us back to the chorus. Melody plays off against the chanted refrain & leaves you breathless and eager for more. Download their EP, follow them on twitter and stand by to be stunned...
