Single Selection: Cody Draiken ~ Ouija Board
Remember Cody Draiken? Him of the instant catchphrases for his twitter fans such as Achin' For Draiken and uh, Bakin' For Draiken (and maybe TrouserSnakin' For Draiken, but I think I made that one up!)?? Anyway, people went totally loony for his very good indeed pop song Vaccuum - and while he got comparisons as a male Key-DollarSign-Ha, these were a bit lazy. In fact he was a bracing kick in the knickers for pedestrian pop with his weird and wonderful approach to music. If only he would do another song...
Well slap me sideways and bugger me with a banana because Cody (Mr Draiken if you nasty) is back! And he's bought his Ouija Board with him! It's all sorts of brilliant for all sorts of reasons - take the cover art displayed in the video above. It conveys an appropriate level of spookiness that Pretty Little Liars would do well to replicate for their hallowe'en special. Cody has an almost 3D quality as he emerges from the background, ready to conquer the world of spirits. The song commences with an eerie but hypnotic synth riff that paves the way for an insinuating beat that grabs the tune & slams it into the world of the living. There are semi-rapped verses and more electronica that has a horror movie vibe to it all before Cody commands you to rock your body til you die. It's delivered almost like he's casting a spell, using alchemy to get your body to groove along to his mesmerising rhythms. It works excellently - the use of vocodor giving off a haunting, other worldly atmosphere & the production of the instrumental matched to the lyrics cleverly ensures that a slightly ominous feeling continues through the track. No alchemy is needed however for you to dance along to this - it's solid dance pop gold and it leaves you breathless & giddy for more. Check out Cody on twitter for a jolly good time (and download the track here)
