Single Selection: Dave Patten ~ Let Me Introduce My Band
I've written about Dave Patten a fair few times in the past - I find his music a refreshing change to the generic electro-pop that is permeating radio these days (and always remain impressed that his videos are always mini movies with completely cohesive storylines & stunning visuals). It's accurate to say that the chap is sickeningly talented - writer, producer, actor, singer & excelling at all. Heck, he's put the accompanying video to his new single, Let Me Introduce My Band, online and it's received over a half a million views in just under a week. Big things are coming Mr Patten's way - and it's not just because he's signed to Meek Mills new record label. It's because there is something quite organic & symbiotic about the song (& Dave's music in general) that weaves it's way into your inner synapses, toys with your senses & ends up firmly embedded in your brain. Let Me Introduce Your Band has a live performance vibe to it that eschews the trend to synthesize everything in a studio and lets you really feel how the song should be played - with bluesy, r'n'b influences permeating the track, the stax-esque horns give it an added frisson of excitement (and imbue the listener with the feeling that they should be grooving along to this in some deliciously smoky club down in New Orleans). The music lives and breathes - a rarity in today's pop music world, but a value that will ensure that the song always remains both timely and timeless. Lyrically, Dave tells a tale of his bad boy self whose long suffering girlfriend believes his friends are a bad influence on him - hence the refrain, let me introduce my band. He doesn't just sing about how important his friends are too him - he performs it with an intensity and passion that is akin to watching some dramatic play on the stage. He has the ability to convey his feelings with such conviction that it's difficult not to be completely immersed in the stories he spins. (This dedication to character continues in the video - above - where Dave gives a performance that would make most Emmy winners envious. The glimpses of him performing show him to be a charismatic and electrifying entertainer on stage as well as in front of a camera. And dude certainly suffers for his art - this and previous vids have seen him beaten, bound, gagged, beaten again, victim of crime, oh and murderous revenge seeker! All in a days work I guess :D) Best get on board with Dave Patten right now, because apparently there are more videos, songs, an album and a tour - and if it's all as thrilling as Let Me Introduce My Band well, it's gonna be one heck of a year...
