Oh how I do love it when a new single release from one of your favourite life loving pop artists sneaks up and grabs you from behind (and let's face it, it wouldn't be such a bad thing to be grabbed from behind by this artist)! So I was jolly pleased indeed to learn today that early next week a brand new single will emerge from the rather marvelous Magnus Carlsson! HURRAH! The song, entitled Glorious, has been previewed on the YouTube & what a sparkling slice of pop it appears to be :) Written by Thomas G:son, Henrik Sethsson and Johnny Sanchez, the clip (above) begins as a lovely, restrained shimmering piece of music that highlights Magnus' resonant & distinctive vocals, singing of the euphoria one feels when you just want to celebrate love & life & the very essence of being. It percolates gradually before erupting into a glittering chorus that swirls like the most beautiful disco ball, all exquisite synths, cascading beats & a vibrant, energetic instrumental. "We're glorious! Victorious" sings Magnus in the most anthemic, epic way you can imagine - and you really do believe that anything is possible as those hopeful, optimistic lyrics grab hold of you making you want to grab the one you love & shimmy (hard). It's gleeful, life affirming and everything you would want from a Magnus Carlsson single. Heck it's everything you would want from a summer pop song period. No wonder Magnus has his tie loosened in the promo pic accompanying the clip - it's a song so enormous, so universal that his dapper outfit is just bursting at the seams to let it out. Utterly, utterly tremendous. Make sure you buy this when it's on iTunes worldwide on June 4th! GLORIOUS :)
(Now, in tradition with my 5 favourite Christmas songs of Magnus I did back in December, here are my 5 favourite solo Magnus songs to date. What are yours??)
- 05 ~ I Was Born This Way: One of the most giddy, celebratory pride songs you could ever wish to hear. Preceding Lady Gaga by a number of years, it's an honest heartfelt tribute to tolerance & acceptance (as well as promoting loving who you are and being happy with that). Joyous & makes me want to hug him everytime I hear this timeless piece of music...
- 04 ~ A Little Respect: Yes it is a cover version of the Erasure classic. But it's so gosh darn festive and chirpy, that it's hard not to be swept along in the general perky S/A/W-esque beat of it all. Part of it the production and some of the video indeed looks like this should have been a Christmas single, it's practically all whistles and bells and slots nicely alongside Darin's Viva La Vida. Oh and the video is quite bizarre and bonkers - it basically seems to be a concept built around the fact that the song begins with the line "I tried to discover..." with Magnus hunting around some desolate wasteland and then re-animating that Michael Jackson HiStory statue for a bit of a boogie. Completely nuts, but very camp and engaging...
- 03 ~ Feel You: It's as off your tits and discotastic as A Little Respect! It's all pulsing dance beat with a soaring club driven melody (that sounds like it would be rather lovely as an acoustic version, as Swedish boys are want to do) and snuggles in perfectly to the always joyous Magnus canon. Think the dance version of Waiting For A Star To Fall and you ain't far off. B-side to this single release. Take Me To Your Heart is like a late 80s S/A/W song remixed now by Pete Hammond, ie - very palatable indeed...
- 02 ~ Best In Me: Oh my amazesticles! Magnus - always a reliable bet for some bonkers, gleeful pop majesty - has popped himself in a time machine, whizzed back to 1989 and produced one of the most thoroughly giddily enjoyable sparklingly fizzy pop treats of the year! It's not just inspired by Stock Aitken & Waterman, it's positively drenched in their influences. I'm pretty certain the backing track owes a huge debt to Love In The First Degree. It doesn't even matter. It's such a feel good piece of music and entirely immensicles and tremendulent (and any other made up word to express sheer happiness you can think of)!
- 01 ~ Live Forever: Soaring 80s electro pop inspired ditty that could not be any better if it tried. It's pointless me wasting any words on how brilliant I find this song because there are no words that do it justice. Just immerse yourself, listen, love, repeat and be happy. Not just the best Magnus song ever but one of the finest pop songs out there :) L.O.V.E
