The Cover Up: Whinnie Williams ~ Bills Bills Bills/Le Temps De L'Amour (Destiny's Child/Françoise Hardy Cover)

For those of you not on board with the effortlessly graceful and amazing Whinnie Williams yet, just click here to read my previous posts about her and you will be all up to date & loving her something sick. She's back for her second installment of Just Popped Out For A Pint of Milk & she's keeping it in the family as last time she was recreating Solange's Losing You; this time it's sister Bey's turn with a bit of Destiny's Child Bills Bills Bills ... And much like Losing You, it's not so much a cover more of an insightful recreation of a well known song - placing it in a different musical setting brings alive nuances in the lyrics that may have previously been missed. What Winnie (and her pals) do here is take the very lovely backing music to Françoise Hardy's 1962 hit, Le Temps De L'Amour (listen here and be cultured) and delicately place the Bills Bills Bills lyrics over the top. The results are utterly transformative. The band lovingly recreate that bo-ho chic Parisian vibe (both visually and aurally) not only through their ingratiating percussion & dreamy guitar strumming, but also their heavenly backing vocals that are exquisitely harmonised to provide maximum effect to the lyrics they sing. And of course Whinnie is, as always, a revelation. She embodies 60s sex-kitten-meets-empowered woman and her reading of the Destiny's Child song is so wistfully delivered that it becomes quite sad, tinged with regret at what life has become. Her voice is so richly resonant & engaging that it becomes utterly mesmerising, the listener smitten as she spins her tale of woe & kicking her no good fella to the kerb. Seriously one of the most beautiful, hypnotic, delicious covers I've heard in the longest time. And the accompanying video is a treat too - here are just some of the highlights...
  • Whinnie and her ace gang strolling across the screen to play their live gig (at a hairdressers) is the very epitome of 60s eleganza...
  • Turning off Simply Red's Holding Back The Years is a wise choice. Everyone knows Fairground was their best song...
  • The guy on guitar looks like he'd be a rollicking good time (not to suggest the drummer wouldn't be, but you know, each to their own :D)...
  • Whinnie's necklace - "TRUST NO BITCH"! Outstanding...
  • The vacant expressions of the band make it look like they are so cool that they cannot even be bothered to try. This works brilliantly within the video concept & makes everything look completely effortless...
  • Whinnie's jelly-plastic shoes are a giddy retro treat. Everyone (girls) was wearing these at middle school. I so wanted a pair but felt already having a My Little Pony perhaps set me apart a bit as it was...
  • The dog. GORGEOUS.
