Weekend Supplement: Petra Mede ~ A Swedish Smorgasboard

There were lots of things to love about Eurovision this weekend, wasn't there? Whether it was the entire rage of twitter when the much beloved Norway entry failed to do as well as their combined fervor towards it; or the Benny-Bjorn penned opening number; or how hot Eric Saade looked in that suit; or the bonkersosity of the Romanian and Finland entries respectively; or that man-in-a-box shadow dancing that accompanied the Azerbaijan entry; or just how not very good at all the British entry was... All in all, it was a jolly fun evening but really when all is said and done there was only one performance that mattered - Petra Mede and her tribute to Sweden :) Utterly camptastic and magnificent. You can view it above and here are just some of the many, many highlights of this Sweden The Musical style cabaret number...
  • Petra is wearing exactly the same hue of blue that Bucks Fizz wore in their seminal performance of Making Your Mind Up. I'm pretty sure it's the same flame retardant material too!
  • Moose ears on the dancers! How avant garde! Talk about your cutting edge fashion statements. I predict these will be in every H&M by Autumn...
  • "A Swedish chef and death playing chess and a girl with a dragon tattoo" - all represented through some quite nice artwork that would look quite good on my guest bedroom wall as it goes...
  • "Winning this contest you get the chance/to host a show you can't afford" Hilarious! It made me want to vote for Greece :)
  • 1m19s! Recylced Percussion done Swedish style! I'm so going to put my empty milk cartons out like this in the future :)
  • Rhyming Mamma Mia with IKEA is sheer genius, as is the line "good luck assembling all the parts". I'm a whiz at it now - my Hemnes drawers are nothing short of a triumph!
  • The bits about standing in line and being quite aloof on trains could have also easily represented British culture. In fact some quite nice looking bloke did smile at me this morning on the commute to work and like Petra I assumed he was drunk or insane. Or both...
  • Pippi Longstocking looked fearful. It's no wonder really - can't she pick up a horse or something? I can barely lift my venti white mocha without breaking a sweat...
  • The whole "evolution of Swedish men" bit from Vikings to caring fathers was amazing. Plus she said titties in front of an estimated audience of 100 million and you can't argue with that. Titter - titties :) (PS - best dance routine featuring prams since Mary Poppins the Musical)
  • 3m55s - GAY WEDDING! IN YOUR FACE REBELLING TORY MPS :) It doesn't seem to have done Sweden any harm. Smooch on grooms, smooch on!
  • Dancing meatballs and a girl having a frolic in a glass of milk :) What else needs to be said!
  • A fleeting cameo from Swedish Schlager star Carola, who does the best fake falling backwards since that bride went out the window on Hollyoaks...
  • So basically it was just bloody brilliant, wasn't it?
