I've become increasingly obsessed with the amazing album "Legendary" by The Summer Set since I wrote about it a few weeks ago (read here; buy here)... I'm jolly thrilled that they will be gracing British shores in a few weeks with an intimate, but no doubt electrifying tour (tickets here) so that they can no doubt increase their burgeoning fanbase here. Plus they seem to be doing splendidly in the Macy's iheartradio rising star contest (vote here). But while any song from Legendary is a guaranteed sing-a-long joy (including bonza current single, Boomerang), I cannot get Maybe Tonight (listen here) out of my head. Surely one of the finest songs they've crafted, here are several incongruous but amazing reasons why it should definitely be the next single in the UK (and around the world). Please. I'm not above begging :D
- The song truly is an anthem. That word is thrown around far too willy nilly for my liking, but there is something so definitive & emphatic about Maybe Tonight. It's all singalong chants, the most enormous chorus one can imagine - and lyrics that are filled with hopes and dreams; all the possibilities that each new night can bring to the world. It speaks to a generation and every generation. It's timely and timeless. It says we are here, we are different, and we are everlasting.
- It's exactly the song needed to kickstart the British sunny season and be sung loud & proud during those lazy hazy crazy days of summer. The "na na" chants in the middle 8 will no doubt sound utterly exhilarating live, but will be just as satisfying blasting out of your car stereo with the top down (the car top or your own top, the choice is yours really. it's that sort of song! Go crazy!)
- Not that it needs this, but after no doubt saturating radio all the live long summer, it's exactly the type of song that those Glee kids will cover in the season premiere, rocketing the tune back up the charts and introducing to a whole new audience. Personally, I'd want Darren Criss to sing it if that were ever to happen...
- The acoustic version (listen here) proves that it is one of those songs that works across a myriad of genres. Lead singer, Brian ensures that just as much vigour, passion and enthusiasm is conveyed on this version as exists on that glorious studio recording. Plus the ditty is clearly designed to make you want to shake your money maker - Brian can hardly be contained in his seat, so persuasive is the music. (Plus the energy of the guitar player is bloody hard to resist and entirely infectious) :D
- MORE BOW TIES! Brian is OWNING the preppy chic bow tie look at the moment, so if there's an excuse to parade out his wardrobe of them in Maybe Tonight photoshoots, tv spots and a video, then I'm all for it. Bow ties are cool. Like little moustaches for your neck :)
- Britain loves a good ol' stadium ready anthem (see also Angels by Robbie Williams, We Are Young by fun and Rule The World by Take That). I can't think of a better song right now to join that elite canon (and be ruined by a pantheon of upcoming auditionees on shows like X Factor :D)
- Finally, in this bonkers world we live in, we could all do with a little "be the best you that you can be" urging from time to time & this is the most euphoric, non-patronising and pleasing way to be urged that I can imagine. The defence rests m'lud :)
