Single Selection: Love of Lesbian ~ Fantastic Shine
I don't really know much about Love of Lesbian except they are Spanish, they have a questionable band name, they have been going for eons and their new single (a return to English language songs) is one of those shimmering ditties that seems to encapsulate everything you want in a summer song (much like The Feeling's Fill My Little Word, Magic Numbers Love Me Like You Do & uh, Wham's Club Tropicana). In just 3 short minutes, the guys collectively known as Love of Lesbian capture summer in a bottle and it's 3 of the most heavenly, blissful, floating moments you could wish to hear. This delightful, delicious song starts off with an almost musical tribute to Seasons In The Sun; there is some sumptuous guitar, addictive chiming mellifluous melody and a beautifully earnest vocal. Added to this as the song progresses is a catchy finger clicking beat that leads into a convivial chant along pre-chorus (accompanied by some booming percussion). (And herein is part of the brilliance of the song - it doesn't have just one chorus, it has mini-choruses to prepare you for the main chorus which is probably needed. The main chorus is beyond fantastic). There is a huge crescendo into the sky bound chorus refrain of everything that is Fantastic. It's designed to make you feel jolly darn good about life and it does that. Puts a smile on your face in the most soul soothing, euphoric way - like you are being let into the secret of the meaning of the universe. Joyous, gleeful, inspiring and just pretty bloody marvelous to be honest with you. There's this innate energy, vibrancy and personality of the band that comes across in the music and it does make you feel part of the experience.
(If my Spanish is serving me well, I believe that the song is actually to accompany a beer advert in Spain. Regardless of what it is for, it works incredibly well as both a commercial jingle and one of the best summer pop songs in recent memory. Hurrah for the Love of Lesbian! Much like the end of the video, it makes you want to snog everyone you come across. FANTASTIC LIFE!)
