Weekend Supplement: The Promise ~ Yesterday's Summer

When you've exhausted yourself with tense, exhilarating, nail biting Wimbledon drama, you need to relax in the warm balmy evening of summer with a Pimms in your hand (unless you are under 18, then you will have to settle for a KiOra or Um Bongo) and have some me time to chill out. It is when you are in this blissed out moments that memories of summers past will come flooding back into your head and make you a bit wistful and nostalgic. It's moments like this that Yesterday's Summer by The Promise were made for. Now, I first wrote about The Promise well over a year ago when their sparkling debut, Beating Hearts was unleashed on the world. You will be pleased to know that this latest track is no less engaging & continues to see the boys in fine vocal fettle as well as having a delightful singalong chorus. It all kicks off with a sprightly, bouncing, percolating beat that is beautifully aided by pretty little piano melodies. A confident, assured vocal is given personality through imbuing the lyrics with subtle emotion - he ranges from bittersweet sadness to empowered passion as the rocky, guitar fuelled chorus kicks in. All this serves to act as the perfect soundtrack for the listener to relate to the lyrics and transport them into their own summer romance experiences - whether it be real-on-the-beach-Ibiza-smoochy-realness or perhaps just gazing at the latest dreamy popstar on your wall. The vibrant energy in the chorus propels the song to new heights and makes you long to hear it sung live with an audience chanting back every single line. And therein lies the power of The Promise ~ they are just to big to be confined by your speaker system. They make tunes that reflect the contemporary nature of current pop, but exist within that enduring, timeless soundscape of classic melody & unfiltered vocal magic. Just lovely.

(And for more evidence of their continued ascent to aceness, check out the teaser of presumed new single, Hypnotised. It's an instantly engaging piece of pop that has a brilliant textured instrumental and once again showcases how the band seamlessly combine the vocals & instruments to ensure that together it all forms part of the story they are so excited to tell. Listen to both on their soundcloud page!)
