The Cover Up: Chris Salvatore ~ Roar (Katy Perry cover)

Well Blimey O'Reilly's trousers! You can't blink this past week or so without finding that some of the world's biggest popstars have unleashed their latest singles onto a breathless-with-anticipation pop hungry public. Lady Gaga is garnering Applause for her new single; Cher's duet with the face painted nudey has leaked online and may be the campest 3 minutes in pop since Agnetha Faltskog's Dance Your Pain Away (released earlier this year); and of course Katy Perry has let us all hear her ROAR! Endless hours have been spent pon de twitter, debating which song is best (watch the world implode if a Britney single leaks before the week is out!) and everyone has their own faves; one thing that is for sure though is that young Chris Salvatore certainly knows his pop - and his love of the genre shines through on his own interpretation of Katy's Roar. I mean, dude turned it out! Not only does he look ridiculously handsome (that hair! Those arms :D) but he delivers a more organic, impassioned version of the already anthemic tune with just a vibrant, strumming guitar for accompaniment (ably provided by the always lovely Gabe Lopez who you already know I adore :D). He doesn't just sing the song, he throws his whole essence into the performance making it as mesmerising to watch as it is to listen to. The acoustic setting really helps his vocal bring out those mellifluous melodies, the sonorous hooks and amplifies the searing sentiment of the lyrics. It's less of a straightforward cover, more of a re-crafting of the song that keeps everything that is so wonderful about the original version and gives it some of that ample Chris Salvatore charm. Case in point - by the second verse, you actually feel like the lyrics are having a tangible effect on Chris, that he's becoming stronger just by singing the song. It's like some Hogwarts wizardry baked right into this delicious version. Hurrah then for Chris Salvatore, eye of the tiger-thrill of the fight working exquisitely for him. Play when you need to get through a long afternoon at work :)
