New & Noteworthy: Daniel Sobrino ~ The Power of Us

Regular readers of this tiny corner of the internet will no doubt know that I'm a sucker for a hot dude in a bow tie. Even more so if he has a particularly natty hair cut. And while that is what may have drawn my eye to young Mr Daniel Sobrino, upon further investigation there's so much more to him than sartorial elegance and immaculately coiffed do. Daniel is the rare singer whose resonant voice stands out in an age of vocoder overkill & autotuned refinery - he's the magical purveyor of mesmerising stories that enchant from start to finish. His latest single, The Power of Us, is the perfect example of this. It's the tale of how love - any love - can lift, cleanse, redeem & heal a person; how it can make two individuals so much stronger together, enabling them to support each other to achieve all their dreams, goals and aspirations. It's a love song to being in love - a tale as old as time that somehow sounds completely charming & soaring in the capable hands of Daniel. It's built around an insistent & persistent piano chord riff that's layered with glorious percussion & invigorating backing vocals during that enormous chorus - it's cleverly done as the music becomes as much a part of the narrative as the lyrics, galloping along inspired by the flush of love & making the listener feel just as giddy, regardless of their own personal cirumstances. It's definitely Daniel who is the anchor of this song though - his expressive voice gives the mellifluous vibe needed to pull the exquisite booming production into something quite intimate. When he sings of "love love love" & "I believe in you and me", there's passion indelibly etched in every nuanced decibel powering forth from Daniel's voice box - he doesn't just sing the song, he utterly becomes the song and inevitably pulls you in with him along for this magnificent ride. What's also wonderful about the song is that while it sounds completely contemporary & radio ready, it's got a timeless feel to it that transcends genres and will still sound just as evocative in 5,10 and 20 years time. Add to this a beautifully shot video (more people should really go to the beach in their bowties) and Daniel Sobrino has delivered the whole package. Download on iTunes now and revel in the marvelous nature of it all...

(Do also check out Daniel's cover of Katy's Roar. He turns it into a restrained, elegant mid-tempo ballad that loses none of the euphoria of the original but accentuates the sadder moments of the song that make the ROAR so much more powerful. Gorgeous).
