SAUL - Don't Have Him
Stream Don't Have Him here (Soundcloud)
I stumbled across the mellifluous music of London based singer-songwriter Saul thanks to the recommendation from a buddy of mine. He's already built a sizeable catalogue of songs for newbies like me to enjoy but it's his latest track Don't Have Him that resonated most and feels ready made for radio/public adoration. I am sucker for a guy with a compelling singing style who knows how to work a piano keyboard and Saul is just that type of guy. Don't Have Him not only gives entirely relateable and addictive lyrics but also provides an utterly mesmerising instrumental to accompany this musical poetry that doesn't feel so much like a backing track but more of a companion narrative to the words Saul so evocatively sings. It's the (sadly) all too familiar tale (to me) of falling for a guy who doesn't exactly reciprocate the feelings that you have for him - and then the bloke rubs salt into the wound by being totally attracted to someone who clearly is absolutely not the right fit for him. It's about being at that stage where you have healed yourself but not to the extent that you can be happy with your ex's new choice of lover. Saul manages to convey just the right amount of disdain mixed with just a dash of melancholy and the tiniest infusion of fury at the story he so brilliantly vocalises. Vibrant piano mixed with a giddy handclap beat (with some shimmering tambourine) give the illusion of these emotions becoming tangible due to the energy that permeates every note and beat performed. There's something undefinable about the song that goes for the core of my soul every time - I'm sucked in and part of the music, cheering Saul on as he gets his point of view across. Amazing. Cannot wait for more from this talented chappy.
