Auryn - Electric

It seems almost incredible to think that I've been writing about Spanish group Auryn for nigh on five years now. They've transcended their new-boyband-on-the-block status to emerge as an enduring and entertaining act in their own right, providing their ever growing army of fans with a diverse range of music to satisfy and delight. Their third album, Circus Avenue, was their finest and most accomplished piece of work to date so new single, Electric, has a lot to live up to. Luckily it's instantaneous charms do not disappoint and it's a fine intro to their upcoming fourth album. Produced by always reliable hitmakers, Red Triangle Pro, it's a percolating pop song that kicks off with an all conquering beat that thumps alongside buoyant synth effects and a hand-clap groove. This sizzling music concoction is the perfect backdrop for a song that is all about that frisson of excitement, those shivers and tingles of anticipation we get at the start of a new relationship. The boys vocals resonate as narrators of this exhilarating time and their cohesive harmonies demonstrate a band who are blissfully at ease singing together. The verses are as dark and seductive as the throbbing sounds of a nightclub while the chorus soars with a tangible energy & irrepressible refrain that has a syncopated cadence to it (making it all too hard to resist). As if this wasn't enough, there are some great touches to the song that really elevate the experience - those quick hand-claps in the verses and the chanted count into the chorus are brilliant pop moments that really hammer home an understanding of how to make a great pop song that sounds both classic and contemporary. The stripped back middle eight with the boys doing a convivial backing vocal only increases anticipation for one more blistering run through of that sing-a-long chorus. It's not only an ace pop song but jolly good fun too - and sometimes I think this is what is missing from the charts today. Well done fellas for bringing back the fun (and the funk). I'm ready for the album now...
