I'm rather smitten with Who's Molly (and no, not just because the lead singer is a tall drink of water). They provide an effervescent mix of sprightly pop rock singalongs and pensive, reflective ballads that tug at your heart strings. They've (quite rightly) built a huge following of fans thanks to their energetic and engaging live shows and are ready to capitalise on this surge of interest with a new song entitled September. It may well already be November, but trust me when I say Who's Molly's September will guide you through the rest of Autumn, into Winter and launch you into spring and beyond. It's a beautifully intricate construction of resonant, shuddering piano chords, shuffling percussion and the elegiac strumming of guitars - all coalescing to create a haunting and melancholy instrumental that is the perfect setting for lead vocalist, Karl's wistful and mellifluous vocal. His mesmerising weaving singing tells a narrative that will be all too familiar to most people listening - all about the nagging doubts we have when in a relationship, the self-sabotage we do to the relationship that are more destructive than any falling out of love could ever be. There's an ominous foreboding embedded into the essence of the song that accentuates the feeling of uncertainty and trepidation - very cleverly done as it makes the listener complicit with the poetic lyrics and compelling score. There's a stunning middle 8 when, surrounded by commanding electric guitars, Karl sings "I've given it all" ad infinitum and you can actually sense the desperation juxtaposed with the finality of those words. It makes this not so much the singing of a song but a fully realised performance of vocalist and musicians. It's a gloriously timeless piece of music that doesn't bow to trends but focuses on enduring melody and solid production. Has me more excited than ever for the debut album (due to drop early 2016). Who's Molly you may ask - it's the band who's soon to be on everyone's lips.
