Songs by KIDS - I Don't Trust Myself
Stream I Don't Trust Myself (full demo) here (Soundcloud)
Stepping away from the mic has done wonders for many a creative singer songwriter - Paula Abdul (she co-wrote Spinning Around), Cathy Dennis, Ed Drewett et al, all have sung songs but then gone on to write gigantic smashes for other people. I've long been a fan of Ian Brearley and Dean Lennon who make up 2/3rds of KIDS. Their gyratings in boy band Digital whilst singing Get Your Kit Off and waxing philosophical about girls who do boys who do boys who do girls are forever etched in my mind ;) Their solo careers explored dancefloor gold yet more recently they've come together to channel their creative juices into crafting pop majesty for new and upcoming singers. They've teamed up with Kerry Lucy (the K in Kerry-Lucy, Ian, Dean Songs), who is no slouch in the singer-songwriter department herself (She co-wrote the banging Ashes to Ashes by Helen Fulthorpe which has soundtracked the debauched start to many a Saturday night for me). Together their talents coalesce to conjure up some magical pop that I just can't get out of my head. There are many clips on their soundcloud page (link above) but one of my current favourites is I Don't Trust Myself. What starts off as an icy cool, crescendo-ing groove soon transmogrifies into a sizzling Prince-esque club banger - the type of tune that feels like a spell has been cast over your body, compelling you to shimmy your way onto the dancefloor as if your very life depended on it. And this tune does give you life - it's a song about what happens when you are hit with emotions and feelings that you aren't sure you know how to control; that all consuming compulsion that washes over you when love and lust sucker punch you out of the blue. Dean provides the vocals, infusing the song with that palpable energy that comes with a nervous excitement. It is a narrative that most listeners will relate to, enhanced by a hand-clap groove, seductive percussion and electrifying synths that serve to emphasize every word and elevate every nuanced note that Dean sings. What makes this work so well is the way the influences are woven into the fabric of the song - it's retro but without being dated thanks to a contemporary vibe that doesn't feel like it's pandering to fads and trends. This is a song that works exquisitely in it's demo format but will no doubt find it's rightful home and go on to the success it deserves. And when you are slinking round the dancefloor to it, remember that it's KIDS who gave you such an enjoyable experience. More please, oh god, so much more please...
