Apollo 5 - Too Close To The Sun

Some of Britain may have (foolishly) voted to leave the European Union this past week, but thankfully music from our lovely neighbours and friends in Europe lives on without political borders or barriers. Take rather ace boyband from Sweden - Apollo 5. Their latest single, Too Close To The Sun, brings glimmering sunshine and deliciously catchy melodies into our lives, by lyrically narrating universal themes that appeals to anyone who has ever been in love. The song could not be more infectious or exhilarating if it tried. It starts off with a hand clap beat that underscores the vibrant guitar riff nicely; this stripped back setting allows the lads engaging vocals to shine through, infusing the song with just the right amount of emotion and feeling. The lyrics have an air of melancholy that is reflected in the singular performances during the verses - this ain't no downbeat number though. As the song accelerates towards the chorus, the instrumental gains more texture, the boys harmonise their voices to perfection, those hand claps get more vigorous and there's an aura that anything is possible during the convivial singalong that is that infernally unforgettable refrain. It all sounds so simple and so effortless - yet good pop music is surprisingly hard to create and even harder to pull off. The guys have done a sterling job here - the song radiates with their passion for the craft, and a zest for pursuing life and love's opportunities as they happen (and celebrating these experiences regardless of the outcome). Add to this a corker of a video that gives further insight into the fellas personalities and you've got a winning song that will have you singing your lungs out all summer long. Bravo Apollo 5 - long may you reign.

  1. A really fine (and artfully written) review of Niklas'/Apollo 5's song "Too Close to the Sun".
