It has been far too long since we heard from the lovely lads of Lectro Lips. They have returned triumpant and as engaging as ever with sterling new single, Daddy Issues. Papa don't preach indeed because even the cover art has me shivering with anticipation. Few acts can look so naturally cool, as if caught completely unawares after a bowlif Reeces Peanut Butter Puffs at the chu-chi cereal bar cafe (with lustrous beards that would give you pash rash for days). Compare with the hurried clip art style of multi-million dollar acts like One Direction and Justin Beiber and you'll see how LL ooze creativity in everything they do. Artwork used to go hand in hand with music and it is a genuine thrill to see how this works here. Daddy Issues is a song about self reflection and realisation. Both music, prose and pose embody this. Frozen synths and a heartbeat bass pulse this song into life, providing the perfect undercurrent for a vocal fueled by angst and yearning, recrimination and regret. The emotions are so palpable that it leaves you breathless, yet desperate to hear more - to live to tell the story of this mesmerising trance like ballad. The damning groove builds into an elegiac rhythm that seems to be the realisation of the running feet of the narrative. The music is allowed to breathe and cascades like falling rain as the song races to inevitable conclusion. Genuinely stunning stuff - now if this was 1990 a cover of Oh Father would be on the b-side...
