Daniel Powter - Delicious

Daniel Powter is so much more than Bad Day. While that irrepressible little gem catapulted him to worldwide stardom, there were many more of his pop songs that were just waiting to be discovered. While the world saw music that favoured technology over talent, Daniel was/is one of a few artists that imbues solid songwriting and melody into his music. Tracks such as Best of Me and Crazy All My Life seem influenced by timeless musicians such as Elton John and Billy Joel, with lyrics that get under your skin and choruses that linger long after the last note has played. Heck, I'm still play Christmas Cupid annually way into February when Valentine's Day enables me to seamlessly merge into the non-festive version. All this is my way of telling you that The Pow (as absolutely no-one is or should probably be calling him) is back with a corker of a new single. Delicious premiered worldwide on Friday and I just can't get it out of my head. I'm hoping this is the lead track from a much delayed new album, because the song is as edible as the title suggests. This vibrant, up-tempo is infused with elements of funk and soul - a narrative all about the intoxicating allure of that special someone who seems to captivate you from the first time you see them. Daniel does an excellent job of giving a vocal that is full of seductive longing and flirtatious anticipation (including 50 Shades of Powter salaciousness - "tie me to your bed post honey, leave me there all day". My safe word is YES PLEASE!), clearly finding the playful nature of the lyrics an exuberant delight to sing. He's engaging throughout but utterly radiant in the dynamic chorus with an ear-worm hook that embeds in your brain from the first moment you hear it. He's ably accompanied by the best guitar riff since George Michael's Faith, a percolating percussive groove and thrilling sound effects that cocoon the listener in an exhilarating wall of sound. Add to this the textured backing vocals and female ad-libs and you are on a finger-clicking, shoulder-shimmying journey that sends your spirits soaring. In this crazy, mixed up world of ours we need a song that doesn't think pop is a dirty word - music that delights from start to finish. Bravo Mr Powter - it's an honour to have you back.
