There are few things more fabulous than finding intoxicating new music from the maestro of pop, one mister Magnus Carlsson. The charismatic, enduring singer is currently wowing Sweden with his shows celebrating his musical career in Alcazar, Barbados and as a solo singer (and part-time saviour of Christmas). I'd love to have enough pennies to jet over to see one of these shows, but I'm also happy to live vicariously through two new songs which he has released to commemorate these performances. The first of these is Från Barbados Till Gamla Stan (which for those of you not bilingual translates to From Barbados to Old Town). If you are getting Greatest Showman realness from those opening bars it is because Mr C has embellished the title song from the movie, adding his own sense of theatrical flair. The dramatic beats and textured backing vocals are still there, but he adds his own intensity to the vocal delivery that builds anticipation, ensuring the much-loved chorus explodes in a glittering shower of euphoria. Synth effects dance evocatively alongside the percussion; but it is very much Magnus' show and it leaves you tingling with ecstasy.
As if this wasn't enough (and it really is), Magnus has recorded a new version of the Alcazar classic, Physical. Galloping keyboard riffs and pulsing rhythms shimmy together, providing a decadent backdrop for his assured, seductive vocal. It is not only a reminder of the endless contribution the gentleman has made to pop but fits in with the theme of his live shows ("it's a magical night"). He has wisely kept the essence of the original but added some sassy new flourishes which make it feel like an old friend come to visit but in a dazzling new wardrobe. That chorus is still 100% pop gold and has you raising your hands to the heavens, giving emphatic thanks that such glorious music still exists in this world. Feel free to pop over to Britain and do a G-A-Y show or two please Magnus. Until then I'll be playing these (and the rest of your discography) on looped, joyous repeat.
