New music from Smith & Thell is always a delight, but when the song is delectably catchy and deliciously deep as Hotel Walls it is a true cause for celebration. Hotel Walls is their first release since their still-amazing Telephone Wires at the beginning of 2019 and it is an absolute gem; the type of song which shimmies into your life and makes you wonder how you ever existed without it. It is a song that is powered by self-reflection and poetic sharing of the internal monologue we all have in our heads, a passionate exploration of the meaning of life which is wrapped in a glorious instrumental and pulsing melody. What Smith & Thell have always been brilliant at is fusing folk music inspiration into exhilarating pop music, layering their songs with a gradual crescendo. This is true of Hotel Walls - the stripped back musings of the opening moments soon explode into a textured wall of sound, complete with layered vocals and a refrain as big as all out doors. "This life - it is beautifully ugly at times" they sing with such knowing wisdom and tangible conviction that you have no choice but to sing along.
