Sean Smith's last collaboration with Beware The Bear (Show Me Love) was one of my favourite songs of 2019. It is a testament to the creative powers of both acts that I am as excited for new music from Sean as I am from the jam-quartet of Beware The Bear. Both have shared exciting new tunes in their own name; Sean via his Solo album and Same Difference revival, Beware The Bear via the dazzling Hummingbird and quixotic charms of I'll Be There. Teaming up one more time shows that BTB know how to craft a song that brings out the best in their vocalist and that Sean knows how to perform the heck out of an absolute banger. If Show Me Love was Deacon Blue magic for a modern era, then new song Wishing On The Water is full on 90s D:Ream danceability blended with a contemporary indie-pop groove. So utterly irresistible then. The lyrics are all about wistfully looking back at those times when life's opportunities lay ahead of you, then accepting the path you went down and celebrating those choices. This gives the song a joyous vibe which is accentuated by the textured instrumental, all glorious piano riffs, muted horns and a sizzling percussive groove (and that is before you get to the exhilarating guitar solo in the middle 8). Sean sounds in his absolute element, euphorically belting out the words with melodic ease. The whole thing is a musical snack, but lets give props to Mr Smith's Oasis-esque delivery of "I was no animal" in verse one - then immerse ourselves back into the ebullient chorus. EPIC.
