Stand by to be stunned. Some songs just exist to have the honesty of the lyrics and beauty of the melody explored and interpreted by artists; performers and producers who can rebuild these compositions and make them feel fresh and immersive all over again. I've always believed this to be a rare skill, and it is one demonstrated by Lucy Kane as she takes on the JC Stewart song, Bones. Produced by Steve Anderson, the song is a haunting and mesmerising piano-vocal partnership that ebbs and flows as naturally as a river - and is just as breathtaking. Lucy doesn't just sing the song, she takes every ounce of emotion and pours it into a passionate delivery. She takes the juxtaposition of the melancholy and celebration in the narrative and exquisitely balances these feelings through graceful singing. She is in perfect symbiosis with the lilting piano, both knowing when to inject resonant moments with power and when to let the moment linger. She is a masterclass in how to project these sentiments without shouting; surely derived from a life of listening to the likes of Karen Carpenter and Gloria Estefan. Life is full of bad moments - yet some of those come from the good. Lucy takes JC's gorgeous words and crafts her own positive story with them. It is pure heaven.
