To quote my infinitely wise mother, this year has not been totally tickety-boo, has it? She's always been one for making the most of a bad situation and has always championed great pop songs coming out of sad times. For example, she thought whoever broke whose heart in ABBA did the world a favour because we got The Winner Takes It All. So I'm embracing the magnificent music coming out of the Great Lockdown of 2020 (as future us will call it) - and taking the excellent words and melodies of Gabe Lopez's new single End Of The Lost Summer to heart. Swathed in a pulsing, shimmering rock-pop instrumental, Gabe eloquently conveys the feelings we all have had this year and puts them to a euphoric refrain we can all sing along to. Amidst the sorrowful words ("its like we were mostly all alone"), there is a simmering aura of hope for a better tomorrow that powers that soaring chorus into the sunny skies still shining above us. Add into this an incredible middle 8 that will be on constant repeat until I learn every rapid-fire word and it all coalesces into the type of song that soothes our woes and gives an endorphin boost the size of a Belinda Carlisle song. Add to your "Brilliant Summer Anthems" playlist, next to classics like Cruel Summer, Lazy Hazy Crazy Days of Summer and (of course) Summer Rain...
