The collaboration between indie-rock combo Beware The Bear and pop singer/stage star Sean Smith has been one of the bright spots of a gloomy 2020. I don't know if they have been each other's lockdown muses but the late summer single, Wishing On The Water (itself a follow up to the excellent Show Me Love), not only shone a deserved light onto a talented bunch of musicians but gave Sean a chance to further demonstrate what a diverse and accomplished vocalist he is. The two acts have teamed up for a full EP of songs (including both those singles) and preview it with the glorious We Will Survive. Its nice to see all the lads on the cover, a simple but effective shot that somehow brings a sense of community to their rallying message. The song is about two people going through a rough patch and their ability to navigate these choppy waters. Ostensibly, it is a story in two parts. The intimate sharing in the verses is set to an engaging guitar riff, radiant piano and shimmering percussion. Sean's voice is warm and heartfelt, sharing his thoughts whilst ably conveying a contagious sense of optimism. Part two comes through that explosive chorus - a crescendo in the music builds a wave of textured sound which washes over you; a ridiculously catchy riff of "we will survive" with added convivial "yeah yeah yeah yeah" that sound like they were meant to be sung back to the artists at full, enthusiastic volume by festival goers up and down the land. It is the happy ending to a love affair but also a call to arms for these turbulent times that a better tomorrow will come and we will emerge, like this blistering chorus, all the more victorious. EPIC.
