The re-return of Steps has been something of a cause for celebration in 2020. The announcement of their upcoming What The Future Holds album shone a hopeful beacon of light into a gloomy world (you could say Steps light up the world)! There was a palpable sense of community in the excitement and anticipation that surrounded (and continues to surround) the album's release; something that was sorely needed in the lockdown world we live in. First single (the album's title track) demonstrated the redemptive power of pop; how sinewy rhythms and soaring hooks can shower healing glitter in the cracks in our souls and lift us up once more. They continue the feel good vibes in their blistering new single, Something In Your Eyes. The song is all about the glorious power of love, set to a gorgeous textured layer of beats, dramatic synths and disco grooves. With a chorus full of multiple sing-along refrains and some genuinely heartfelt vocals from the gang it is perhaps their most ABBA moment since Story Of A Heart. The precision, emotion and layering of those vocals in the middle 8 makes me want to weep with happiness. Then that key change is like the fab five riding in on unicorns, rainbows cascading around them. So, pretty darn gleeful. It absolutely plays to their massive fan base but has the potential to transcend genres and become a Tragedy sized hit - making the oncoming winter months feel joyful and triumphant. EPIC.
