If you are a good egg and reading this on October 30th, this you will probably already know it is Rod Thomas' (the man who is Bright Light Bright Light) birthday. How better to celebrate his arrival day than by immersing yourself in his latest single. Good At Goodbyes is taken from his album Fun City and feels more like a birthday gift to the listener! This delectable duet sees Erasure's Andy Bell join Mr Thomas for a melancholy exploration of break-ups and how each one seems to take another tiny piece of us with them. In true Donna Summer style, the fragility of emotion is explored through piano-vocal balladry; but both artists have always excelled at dancing their tears away & this soon transforms into a true disco stomper. The synth cascades like light from a glitter ball while the throbbing beat of the verses raises anticipation for the chorus. From this sadness comes the utter joy - not just of one icon getting to sing with a legendary other, but also the way the music encourages you to liberate yourself from the sorrowful emotions.

There are a few notable bonuses about the single release - firstly, that exquisite cover art. It is beautifully rendered and in keeping with the Fun City catalogue of releases. BLBL in his finest Chorus-era t-shirt with Andy's face on the Ferris Wheel feels like it could be a print you used to buy in Athena, then hurry home to hang on your bedroom wall (I miss those days). There are also a plethora of remixes - including one by Vince Clarke who delivers an Erasure-ish vibe thanks to percussive hand-claps and electronica that gives the words a more stark honesty. Across six minutes, it crescendos into a lush wall of sound that makes it feel as much an Erasure song as it does a Bright Light Bright Light one. Meanwhile Grammy winner DJ Tracy Young transforms it into a pulsing pop floor filler where sinewy rhythms almost command you to shimmy away the hurt. Its a cathartic groove that you will have no problem getting into.
