Candy Apple Blue - Moon (Light Up My Darkness)

It has been quite the year for pop combo Candy Apple Blue - they've not let a global pandemic tamper down their creativity and have continued to share pop bop after pop bop with their ever growing legion of fans. I've barely finished crying my eyes out over the heartfelt magnificence of their last single (Crying My Eyes Out) when Moon (Light Up My Darkness) hit streaming services everywhere. Carly takes lead vocals on this nocturnal 80s-infused synth groove, channelling influences as diverse as Blondie, Terri Nunn and Madonna. She is swathed in a vibrant keyboard riff, percolating percussion that give the song an italo-house feel and gothic ad-libs from Hoyt that add to the magic mysticism of the lyrics. With a tale that feels like it should be the credits music of the next Hocus Pocus movie, this mid-tempo gem wraps around you like the dusky folds of night yet brightens your playlist with that soaring chorus. It feels as powerful as any patronus, a swirling, cascading vortex of sound that all coalesce to make you give praise to the healing powers of the universe. And in today's troubled times this takes you away and leaves you shimmying with glee long after the music has faded. Aces.
