Revisit my review of Marisha's Christmas album, Soul Holiday, here
The radiant positivity emanating from Marisha Wallace, manifest across her carefully timed preview songs from upcoming album Tomorrow, have infused the gloomy nature of the past few months with a sense of stirring hope. She has chosen to showcase exquisitely curated songs which absolutely brim with unbridled determination and optimism; singing with such emotion that her unwavering belief blasts through your chosen listening device and buoys your spirits. As we face a second lockdown, she is joined by the mighty tones of Michael Ball on the Queen classic The Show Must Go On. The genius lyrics of the song mean they are relevant today as we all find ways to live with a pandemic which threatens not only our health but how we live our daily lives. As Marisha sings the stark reality of the opening lines, there is a restlessness and ennui to her voice as haunting organ conveys the unease and dissatisfaction we all feel in this moment. Michael is equally as resonant in his denouement, yet as emphatic strings swell around him there is a glorious crescendo into the chorus. M&M are seemingly inspired by reaching out to each other, drawing power and passion from their shared creed. It is brilliantly produced (including keeping that key change as the second verse arrives), with music as furious and fervent as the magnificent vocals. As Marisha sings "my make up may be flaking but my smile still stays on", it becomes a rallying cry to the creative power of the theatre community whose art has been devastated this past year. Add to this a genuinely operatic middle 8 and the listener absolutely becomes one with this dramatic, essential song. Play loud, play often and tell everyone you've ever met about this spine tingling endorphin rush.
