Well, this is a little bobby dazzler of a treat, isn't it? The official third single from Erasure's The Neon album (but feels like fourth thanks to Shot A Satellite) is one of the opus' stand out tracks. Fallen Angel felt like a potential single from the moment The Neon hit my turntable. Andy's resonant vocal floats over a bed of Vince's trademark mesmerising synth riffs, whilst the chorus is a triumphant pop refrain that seems to take up a permanent residency in your brain. As so often is the case with Erasure, it is the lyrics that make this a haunting pop offer - all about the innate capacity we all have in life to mess things up so completely that it may seem a little hopeless. But there is light at the end of the (world) tunnel; the titular fallen angel can fly again and Andy is practically your own personal cheerleader for change as he sings "love just like it's second nature". The single mix feels a little tauter than the album version, yet keeps the song's charm in tact. It is a classic Erasure hook mixed with a contemporary sound (that throbbing bass, the fuzzy electro drama) and one you'll be likely singing all the live long day. They may no longer dominate the singles chart but they definitely know how to craft a mighty fine pop song.
