Marisha Wallace - My Declaration

I can't keep waxing melancholic about how dreadful 2020 has been so I'm just going to focus on the positive. The theatre community has always been a source of great joy and inspiration for me; in 2019 I saw 43 live productions as well as several cinematic screenings. This year - not so much. What has happened though is that creative folk have found another way to express themselves. Lucie Jones and Joel Harper-Jackson have both released phenomenal albums; another one is on its way from the glorious Marisha Wallace. She's already given us glittering sneak peeks via Tomorrow, Before I Go and Climb Every Mountain. She's now sharing her interpretation of Tom Baxter's My Declaration. The original is a song about wanting to be a better person, about seizing on the innate human ability to change and grow. This fits beautifully with the theme of Marisha's upcoming Tomorrow album and she delivers the song with such earnest grace that it is like a modern day hymn. The song starts as a piano-vocal duet, enhancing the fragile hope of the lyrics. Strings sweep in like mist on the horizon, gently buoying Marisha's voice and giving her the strength to continue her soul searching. When the wall of sound instrumental crashes in on the second verse, she is utterly majestic - soaring and sharing her message as a rallying call to arms. The song becomes a beacon of light in the dark. My mum always used to say, when there is sadness you will always find the right song to lift the world back up. This is that song. The crescendo at around 3m, leading into that epic finale, is EXQUISITE.
