I love when my favourite artists take me to bold, new, evocative places - embracing a different persona as they push their boundaries into thrilling new genres. Think Madonna as Dita, Garth Brooks as Dita and, now, Debbie Gibson as DJ Debbie G. Teaming up with Push.Audio, Debbie has crafted her new identify in order to create compelling jingles for national television commercials. The results are a testament to her grounding in both the clubs and the pop charts - each mini-vignette she has worked on sounds like it could follow Girls Night Out in the top 4 of the US and UK charts! My favourite of these is the sparkling magic of Colours, a soaring anthem where she keeps the NRG up and reminds us that the spirit of Electric Youth thrives no matter how old you are. With a pulsing percussive beat and a nouveau-retro instrumental, DJ Debbie G sings of how you are most powerful and illuminative when your true authentic self shines through. The way the music throbs and builds anticipation for the explosive chorus means you are showered in an endorphin rush of glittering rhythms and a refrain that will stick in your head all the live long day. Add to the layered vocals of the middle 8 and in just 2 minutes and 33 seconds she has already gifted us with one of the most joyous pop hooks of 2020. Joyful and triumphant! Delve a little deeper and there are more gems to be uncovered...
  • Feel It ~ with horn-infused riffs and a groove that slaps, the song opens with a vintage style Gibson rap that recalls the halcyon days of Stand Your Ground and Shock Your Mama; those electro-synth vibes take you to the club at midnight when the flashing lights and convivial cavorting on the dance floor are an exhilarating experience. Just needs a "Drop The Beat & Take It To The Street" 12" remix...
  • I Do What I Want ~ I love an empowered Ms Gibson and the guitar licks on this give her a sassy attitude that conjures up images of her strutting through Vegas, taking no promises. A spiritual sister to Colours (also - love the British spelling), this is an anthem for anyone who has been marginalised or oppressed. Finding your voice sounds utterly radiant. Note - this would be an excellent track for Little Mix...
  • Good Things ~ I'm sure this year has lasted about 36 months and we all need a little bit of optimism to help us focus on a better tomorrow. Good Things lets us do just that. The chorus is pure pop, her most Out Of The Blue inspired work in many a year - she sounds thoroughly intoxicated singing such a vibrant hook. That feel good vibe is the only contagious thing you need in your life right now!!
  • 4Eva ~ my mum was a teacher and had a pet peeve for "alternative spelling" in pop songs (she was always bemoaning Prince). She loves Debbie as much as me so I'm sure she'd forgive the normally grammatically Debbie's brief foray into text speak! This could be the follow up to Girls Night Out with a down'n'dirty insistent bass & a sizzling sultry spoken moment that could melt ice cubes!
