The Cover Up: The Future Kicks ~ Roar (Katy Perry cover)

Well flap me sideways and bugger me gently! You wait ages (about 5 days) for a cover of the amazing new Katy Perry song, Roar, and then two come along at once (see here for my thoughts on the stripped back Chris Salvatore version). The Future Kicks have always been reliable purveyors of vibrant, energetic pop cover versions that showcase their engaging personalities, wicked sense of humour and abundance of talent - in ROAR, they've found a track that enables them to take their success rate to the next level (and in the process no doubt win them a plethora of new fans). They give the song a booming, industrial sound thanks to prominent percussion that is punctuated by ingratiating "heys" and fuzzy guitar riffs that add a sizzling frisson to the track. It's not quite as frenetic as some of their other cover versions and this makes for a nice change of pace that allows for their delivery of those inspirational, inspiring, rousing lyrics to shine through (another great job on lead vocals by Zen whose hair is as wild as the guttaral titular ROAR the boys are singing of)! What's great about The Future Kicks is how cohesive they are as band - it genuinely seems that their symbiotic musical relationship fuels their performances to dizzying heights. They also pull some witchity hogwarts style magic because by the time they have finished the song, they have easily convinced you that the tune belongs to them & the Katy Perry original has somehow EVAPARATO from your mind :) Couple of extra points - the guitar in the middle 8 is just a delight; oh and when the whole gang is singing along it is like some massive convivial party that everyone's invited to :) Just dandy.

(Oh and this cover's hottest Future Kicker is Bri. His hair is amazing :D)
