When you encounter the lush, textured pop music landscapes of difficult-to-google-but-worth-the-perseverance quartet Boys, you know you have stepped into an intoxicating blend of lo-fi sounds and mesmerising lyrics that you won't want to leave. Their hypnotic, beguiling new single, Dreamland, from an upcoming EP of the same name is the perfect introduction for those who are arriving a little tardy to the Boys party. It is a gloriously ethereal creation that seems to encapsulate everything that is so balmy and hazy about the scorching summer months, yet manages to be the type of tune you will cling to in the deepest, darkest recesses of winter. Jangling guitars dance intricately around each other to craft a wall of sound that seeps into your soul with its beauty and majesty; weaving alongside this is a compelling percussion that adds a rhythmic groove to the music that is all too hard to resist. What this evocative score does is conjure up images that are just as powerful as the suggestions sung in the narrative of the song - that of a person lost in their own thoughts, the world around them a mere shimmering oasis to the reality that consumes them. Lead singer, Ross, does an exquisite job of giving achingly yearning vocals that are added to the song in an almost ghost-like, echoing, hypnotic effect. He brings the melody subtly to the fore, letting his performance permeate into the ethers - like a summer breeze that makes me feel fine. It is all beautifully done, relying on talent over technology to engender a wonderfully emotive song. Can't wait to hear more...
