As long as Fly By Midnight keep putting out top quality pop jams, I will keep writing about them. On the follow up to the still-stimulating Caffeine, the lads have teamed up with long-time pal and collaborator Jake Miller on new single, Automatic. One of the talents of Fly By Midnight is their ability to pull out the feelings of the every day person and convey them in a poetic way that makes them instantly relatable. Automatic pulls out the sense of feeling lost in the world ("like I'm on a wait list for someone who really knows me") and how being hit by the euphoric power of love can liberate you from your doldrums. Sung with a nuanced insight that can only be drawn from their own experiences, the vocal performances make you feel every thrilling element rather than just telling you about. You're in the pulsing heart of the song, recognising how finding that special someone can unleash your potential. The beautifully layered voices of the chorus against that booming instrumental are as vivid as waves crashing onto the shore on a balmy summer day - and just as exhilarating. Together with Jake, the trio have no need to shout it to the rafters or deliver multi-note melisma. Their assuredness means they own every word and imbue with the right amount of feeling that it leaves you tingling. EPIC.
